Makhi Hughes

Running BackRB
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After receiving only eight carries in the opener during the 2023 campaign, Hughes averaged 19.2 carries per contest the rest of the way. The loss of head coach Willie Fritz figures to result in a scheme change of sorts. New head coach Jon Sumrall's offense at Troy threw the ball 48.5 percent of the time last season compared to Fritz's 41.1 percent at Tulane, but that adjustment should be offset by the fact that the Trojans ran 3.5 more plays per game, and Sumrall leaned more on his lead back at a heifer rate, resulting in a whopping 297 carries for Kimani Vidal last season. Hughes is undoubtedly capable of handling a similar workload, compiling 258 of his own carries last season, so the opportunity should remain for him to post similar numbers during 2024. Catches on with Oregon
January 7, 2025
Hughes announced Tuesday that he has committed to Oregon, joining the program as a transfer from Tulane, Max Olson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Widely viewed as the No. 1 running back in the transfer portal, Hughes, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound sophomore, will arrive at Oregon with two more years of eligibility left and should be the frontrunner to emerge as the Ducks' lead back in 2025 with Jordan James moving on to the NFL. Hughes was one of the nation's most productive backs over the past two seasons, earning first-team, all-American Athletic Conference honors both years while amassing 3,022 yards from scrimmage and 32 total touchdowns during that span. Rising redshirt senior Noah Whittington (118 carries for 540 yards and six touchdowns, 24 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games in 2024) will likely represent Hughes' stiffest competition for touches out of the Oregon backfield in 2025.
