Top College Basketball Best Bets for Today

It was a mixed bag for my picks yesterday as Colorado State rolled Loyola, but Hampton and Troy disappointed. The action on the court definitely did not disappoint on Sunday as Notre Dame/Ohio State and Houston/Auburn both went to the wire. Even during a time when football dominates, college hoops manages to put out an outstanding product to garner attention. Monday's schedule is a bit lighter, but there are still gems to be mined. Let's jump in.

Oakland Golden Grizzlies at UCF Golden Knights

Here is my annual complimentary piece on Greg Kampe and his Oakland Grizz. Year after year, Kampe's teams play anyone, anywhere, and this year as a prime example. The Grizzlies have played at #14 Michigan, #5 Purdue, and #3 Houston in their first three games and now get a "break" in the form of a road trip to Orlando to face UCF who ranks #68 on KenPom. You know Oakland is going to bring it, and UCF's style can keep teams in games, as evident by their four-point home victory over #146 Hofstra to open the season. I'll take all the points in this Golden matchup tonight.

College Basketball Best Bet: Oakland +12.5 (universal)

VCU Rams at NC State Wolfpack

This has the makings of a spectacular contest. NC State is an early season darling with renewed energy and expectations after bringing on Will Wade to lead the Pack and luring D1 veterans Darrion Williams (Texas Tech), Terrance Arceneaux (Houston), and Tre Holloman (Michigan St) to completely overhaul the roster. Clearly, that's a more-than-solid start to putting his stamp on the program and NC State's 3-0 start reflects their potential. However, VCU is flying high as well and is, by far, the best team the Wolfpack will have played to day. The Rams were game in a fantastic neutral-site game against #46 Utah State that ended in a three-point loss. VCU will bring wave after wave of bodies to combat the talent of NC State and I believe the Rams will keep this one close.

College Basketball Best Bet: VCU +12.5 (universal)

Rice Owls at Tennessee Volunteers

Rice and Rob Lanier have already taken on a formidable opponent away from home in the form of a four-point loss at #56 Oregon, and while the Vols are another tier above the Ducks, Rice won't be intimidated. The Owls bring back the 38th most D1 experience in the country and it can take Rick Barnes some time to get his system to mesh, particularly with a roster as young as he has this season. The Vols will win comfortably, but this is too many points.

College Basketball Best Bet: Rice +26.5 (universal)
