Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Julian Phillips started in 25 of his 32 appearances with the Vols during his freshman year and averaged 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.5 blocks across 24.0 minutes per game on a veteran-laden Tennessee team. His best game of the season came against USC on Nov. 24, when he scored a season-high 25 points while adding eight rebounds. The forward delivered just five games with 15 or more points, however. He also recorded three games with at least 10 rebounds and two double-doubles. Phillips also dished out a season-high six assists against Georgia on Jan. 25. Phillips played in the frontcourt and was forced to play near the rim more often than one would expect, given his size. He's a long, wiry 6-foot-7 wing with good athleticism and a massive wingspan. Phillips uses his size and athleticism to be a capable defender both inside and outside. He's not afraid to do the dirty work when needed and provides an energy spark off the bench due to his intensity and hustling. The Tennessee product is a good rebounder for his size and projects as an above-average defender at the next level. There are some concerns regarding his offensive game, as he only shot 41.1 percent from the field and 23.9 percent from three-point range. He made 82.2 percent of his free throws, however, so the shooting touch is there. He's raw offensively but NBA-ready from a defensive perspective. Phillips has raw talent and needs reps to keep improving his game, but it remains to be seen if he'll be able to contribute in an NBA rotation right away. He profiles as a player that will likely start his career at the G League level while crafting his offensive game but may be a solid role player in the future. If Phillips can hone his outside shot, the forward has the profile to be a competent three-and-D wing. Even if that's not the case, his defensive instincts should give him a place in the league, even if he has to work hard for it.

Solid Summer League
FChicago Bulls
July 19, 2023
Philips averaged 8.8 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 52.0 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc in four Summer League appearances for Chicago.
ANALYSIS The sample sizes for Philips offensively are small, but connecting on four of nine three-point attempts is a fine starting point; the 19-year-old hit just 23.9 percent of 46 three-point attempts throughout his freshman campaign at Tennessee. Phillips flashes ambidexterity around the rim, is an excellent athlete in transition and profiles as a offensive rebounding threat, but the rest of his offense is very raw.
