Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Jaylen Clinton Andrew Nowell was born in Seattle in 1999. Both of Nowell's parents, Lanie and Mike, played collegiate basketball at Clark Atlanta University. Nowell attended Garfield High School in Seattle, the same school that produced former NBA guards Brandon Roy, Will Conroy and Tony Wroten. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, helping Garfield to the Class 3A KingCo Championship. As a junior, Nowell's 17.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game netted him USA Today All-Washington second-team honors. After high school, Nowell took his talents to the University of Washington, choosing to play for the Huskies over the likes of Stanford, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Oregon. You can follow him on Twitter @JaylenNowell. Nowell was named the 2019 Pac-12 Player of the Year and was picked for the 2019 All-Pac-12 Tournament first team after a successful sophomore season at the University of Washington. The Seattle native helped lead the Huskies to the 2018-19 Pac-12 regular-season title as well as the conference tournament final before losing to Oregon. Nowell also helped Washington to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. He led his team in points (16.2), assists (3.1) and rebounds (5.3) per game in 2018-19. Nowell announced his desire to enter the 2019 NBA Draft after two college seasons. He was selected in the second round (43rd overall) in the draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Inefficient off bench
GNew Orleans Pelicans
November 5, 2024
Nowell produced 11 points (4-12 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), two rebounds, one assist and one steal across 23 minutes during Monday's 118-100 loss to Portland.
ANALYSIS Nowell made just his second appearance for the Pelicans against the Trail Blazers after signing with New Orleans on Saturday. While the 25-year-old guard struggled with his efficiency, he was the team's leading scorer off the bench. With Jordan Hawkins (back) questionable for Wednesday and Dejounte Murray (hand) and CJ McCollum (thigh) out for significant periods, Nowell could continue to receive extended playing time.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2019
After four years with the Timberwolves, Nowell moves on to the Kings. The 2019 second-round pick has shown some intriguing per-minute fantasy upside in the past, though he's never seen more than 19.3 minutes per game in a season (2022-23), when he averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists. With Sacramento, he may not be a part of the rotation every night. Nowell will be competing with other established reserve guards like Davion Mitchell, Malik Monk and Chris Duarte.
Injuries to multiple players on the Wolves allowed Nowell to have a steady role in February and March. During those two months, he averaged 10.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 20.1 minutes. He saw only sporadic action before and after that stretch. Nowell's role will probably be relatively small to start this season, as the Wolves enter the campaign healthy and didn't lose any core pieces in the offseason. Nowell can be ignored in almost all drafts.
Drafted with the 43rd overall pick in 2019, Nowell joins the Timberwolves. The 6-foot-4, 202-pound sophomore out of Washington was voted Pac-12 Player of the Year on the back of 16.2 points (50.2 FG%, 44.0 3P%, 77.9 FT%), 5.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals across 34.4 minutes. He projects as a quality three-point shooter at the NBA level considering he shot 90-for-227 (39.6 percent) across his 70 collegiate games. Arguably his best in-conference performance last season came during a Pac-12 Tournament victory over USC, where Nowell dropped 24 points on 13 shots, plus eight rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. With the Timberwolves, Nowell will compete against the likes of Josh Okogie and Jarrett Culver for reserve minutes at shooting guard. There seems to be a chance that Nowell could be an every-night rotation player if everything goes right. While it probably won't result in fantasy relevance during his rookie season, Nowell makes for an intriguing dynasty league option.
ANALYSIS Golden State has brought in a range of veterans for workouts this offseason as the team considers all its options for the final spots on the roster. Nowell is one of the younger players in that group, and the 24-year-old guard averaged 19.3 minutes a night over 65 contests for the Timberwolves last season while producing a career-high 10.8 points a game.
