Despite starting 33 games during his inaugural season, Black's output left a lot to be desired, even for a rookie. He barely finished as a top-400 player, averaging 4.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 16.9 minutes per game. Taken with the No. 6 pick in the 2023 draft, it remains unclear whether Black will turn into a consistent rotation player. Orlando opted to part ways with Markelle Fultz during the offseason, perhaps an indication that they have at least some faith in Black as a long-term piece. However, with the team primed to contend in the Eastern Conference, it is unlikely Black plays more than 20 minutes per game, barring injuries to other players. Although it should be an improved campaign, there is no reason to consider Black a viable fantasy asset, even in deeper formats. As for dynasty leagues, he is worth holding, especially if you are not in win-now mode. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a two-year, $14.85 million contract with the Magic in July of 2023. Contract includes $7.97 million team option for 2025-26. The Magic picked up Black's team option for 2025-26 in October of 2024.
Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Anthony Black was a five-star recruit in the high school class of 2022 who played his lone collegiate season at Arkansas. Starring alongside fellow highly touted freshmen Nick Smith and Jordan Walsh, Black started all 36 of his appearances and averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.1 steals and 0.6 blocks in 34.9 minutes per game. The Texas native shot 45.3 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from three and 70.5 percent from the free-throw line. Prior to arriving at Arkansas, Black spent time at Coppell High School in Duncanville, TX before transferring to Duncanville High School for his senior season. Earlier in his high school career, Black was not considered an elite prospect, but he closed his senior season as a consensus top-20 player in his class. Black is an excellent on-ball defender and a willing passer who prefers to set up teammates rather than create his own shot, but his size is his biggest asset. Black is essentially a point guard with the body of a wing, enabling him to work over and around defenders with ease. He's a good finisher at the rim and an above-average athlete, but operating as a playmaker in the pick-and-roll is where he's most comfortable. At this stage in his development, Black is not a great three-point or free-throw shooter, so developing confidence and better mechanics will be a priority. Black projects as a high-to-mid-lottery pick in 2023 and figures to be an instant-impact player as a rookie. His size, athleticism and willingness to pass should make him an attractive fit for several teams in the lottery. Black draws comparisons to current NBA players like Cade Cunningham, Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels.

At this stage in his development, Black is not a great three-point or free-throw shooter, so developing confidence and better mechanics will be a priority. His Summer League played out as profiled. Black slashed a poor 41/17/55 but racked up 26 rebounds, six steals and two blocks in three games. Aside from his shooting issues, another concern for the rookie as a fantasy asset is Orlando's logjam at guard. He's competing for minutes with Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, Jalen Suggs and Gary Harris. At this point, though, it wouldn't be surprising if Suggs or Harris was the odd man out. Preseason may give us more information on Black's potential role, but fantasy managers should exercise caution when drafting him.

Had excellent Orlando workout

Black "had a strong visit with Orlando and believes he's very much in play for the sixth selection," writes Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
ANALYSIS Black would create a slight logjam in Orlando, but the 6-foot-6 Arkansas product would fit the Magic's mold of length and vision. Fischer says "the Magic are indeed considering guards with size at No. 6."
