2026 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Coming off four straight 30-homer campaigns, Alvarez was limited to 48 games last season due to a hand fracture and ankle sprain. The veteran slugger certainly wasn't a stranger to injuries prior to 2025, but he still averaged 135 regular-season games per year and was consistently one of the best hitters in MLB. Even when available in 2025, Alvarez's performance was underwhelming, as he finished with a career-worst .797 OPS and just six home runs. However, he still showcased his elite plate discipline with a 14.5 percent walk rate and 16.6 percent strikeout rate. The skills are clearly still there as Alvarez enters his age-29 season, but durability remains a concern. His ADP in 2026 will likely end up being a bit of a discount if he's able to stay healthy, and most fantasy managers will probably be willing to take the risk given Alvarez's elite track record. Resumes jogging
General manager Dana Brown said Wednesday that Alvarez (ankle) has begun jogging at roughly 70 percent intensity, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Alvarez suffered a severe left ankle sprain during the final weeks of the regular season. Brown's comments indicate that the 28-year-old is coming along nicely in his recovery, and the GM added that he expects Alvarez to be ready to go by the start of spring training. The righty-hitting slugger also missed significant time in 2025 due to a fracture in his right hand and finished the season with just a .797 OPS across 199 plate appearances.

If Alvarez had a 100% health rating, you could make the case for him being the first hitter taken after Acuna Jr. When Alvarez is not playing through an injury or missing time with an injury, he is a run producing monster. Alvarez was limited to 114 games due to hand, arm, and an oblique injury yet still managed to finish in the top 25 for home runs and RBI despite the missed time. Alvarez is doing now what David Ortiz was doing at the end of his career numbers wise, but doing so in 80% of the plate appearances. If Alvarez could ever get a full season, 2005-2007 Ortiz numbers are at the edge of possibilities for him because he is that good of a hitter. He takes his walks and he does not strike out at the rate other hulks like him do while also handling lefties well. Simply put, this is a fantasy foundational player who is a perennial MVP candidate and worth the risk to reach because the numbers he could put up in a 600 plate appearance season will win leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return soon
Alvarez, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with right hand inflammation, could be back in the lineup in approximately one week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Alvarez missed the Astros' last two games due to the injury, but since the team backdated the transaction to May 3, Alvarez will be eligible for activation by next Tuesday. The slugger has uncharacteristically struggled early this season, hitting just .210 with a .646 OPS in 121 plate appearances.
