Tomas Nido

30-Year-Old CatcherC
Detroit Tigers AAA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After spending his entire career with the Mets, Nido was released in mid-June. He was contributing his usual stellar defense, but the club decided to move on from his career .564 OPS. The Cubs signed Nido, and he split time behind the plate until spraining his knee and undergoing a debridement procedure in late July. He returned in mid-August but was released two weeks later. The Tigers signed Nido to a minor-league deal in September, then reupped the contract in January. Nido will compete with Dillon Dingler and Brian Serven to serve as Jake Rogers' backup. If Nido comes away with the job, he's an option in deep two catcher leagues after posting above average Hard-Hit and Barrel rates last season. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a one-year, minor-league contract with the Tigers in January of 2025.
Goes deep twice Wednesday
CDetroit Tigers  AAA
March 5, 2025
Nido went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four total RBI in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Nido, who had only four home runs across 49 games for the Mets and Cubs last year, unexpectedly supplied some power in this one. The veteran joined the Tigers on a minor-league deal in January. The team has Jake Rogers and Dillon Dingler ahead of him on the catching depth chart, but Nido provides some insurance in case Detroit's catching depth is tested.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
Nido is valued for his contributions behind the plate, namely his defense and pitch framing. If you're a Mets pitcher, Nido is neat-o, but he doesn't do enough with the bat to be worthy of consideration in standard mixed leagues. He's topped out at four home runs in a season and owns a career .323 SLG. He's struck out in roughly a quarter of his 744 career plate appearances in the majors, though to his credit he surged to a .280/.306/.449 line after the All-Star break last season. The Mets signed Omar Narvaez and have top prospect Francisco Alvarez waiting in the wings, leaving Nido as a placeholder keeping a seat warm. Nido can be considered viable in two-catcher NL-only formats, but that's only until Alvarez supplants him.
Mets pitchers didn't seem particularly fond of throwing to Wilson Ramos, which led to Nido receiving 144 PA in 2019. While those throwing to him liked him, Nido's offense was so deficient that it mostly negated his contributions behind the plate. This past season saw Nido appear in all of seven games. He had a two-homer game but was placed on the injured list Aug. 25 for undisclosed reasons and was not seen again at the major-league level. Hopefully, Nido has been able to enjoy a healthy offseason. He was said to be taking part in baseball activities in September and will be in line to back up James McCann if back to full strength.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
More playing time likely
CNew York Mets  AAA
April 6, 2023
Mike Puma of the New York Post reports Omar Narvaez will miss 8-to-9 weeks with a calf strain, so Nido is likely to see a boost in playing time.
ANALYSIS
Top prospect Francisco Alvarez is set to join the Mets and should receive plenty of starts, but he could split his time between catcher and designated hitter. Nido started three of New York's first seven games, all against lefties, but he may not have such a distinct platoon advantage anymore since Alvarez is a switch hitter. Nido has a .573 OPS in his big-league career and is unlikely to warrant fantasy consideration regardless of his role.
