2025 Fantasy Outlook
Cecconi was recalled to the majors four times and optioned to the minors five times by the Diamondbacks in 2024. While the 25-year-old pitched well in a tough environment at Triple-A Reno, posting a 3.06 ERA and 54:14 K:BB over 47 innings, he wasn't nearly as successful with the big club as he split time between starting and long relief. Cecconi has collected a solid 24.1 percent strikeout rate and 6.8 percent walk rate in the minors, and while the good control has followed him to the majors (4.7 percent walk rate), the bat-missing has not (18.7 percent strikeout rate). The Guardians saw something to like with Cecconi and received him in the Josh Naylor trade over the offseason. Cleveland's reputation with pitching development is reason enough for fantasy managers to be more interested in Cecconi, although a spot in the Opening Day rotation does not appear to be a guarantee. Records seven outs in Game 3
Cecconi didn't factor into the decision during Thursday's loss to the Tigers, giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters across 2.1 innings.
Analysis
Cecconi kept the Tigers off the board through the first two innings of the game with little trouble, but back-to-back singles from the Tigers in the third were all manager Stephen Vogt needed to see to take his starter out of the game after just 47 pitches. Reliever Tim Herrin allowed one of the inherited runners to score, preventing Cecconi from finishing his Guardians postseason debut unblemished. With Cleveland now shifting its focus to the 2026 campaign, Cecconi should have a good chance at cracking the Opening Day rotation after turning in a 4.30 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 132 innings in the regular season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
The right-hander made his MLB debut for Arizona last season and posted a solid 4.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB across 27 innings while working as a swingman. Cecconi otherwise exclusively worked as a starter at Triple-A Reno but scuffled to a 6.11 ERA in 23 outings. He has plenty of prospect pedigree as the 33rd overall pick of the 2020 Draft but hasn't put up notable numbers in the minor leagues. Cecconi should compete for a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation during spring training and will likely make some starts at some point even if he misses the Opening Day roster, but he seems unlikely to be a reliable back-end starter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could rejoin MLB rotation
Zac Gallen suffered a hamstring strain Thursday against the Mets, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com, so Cecconi may have a chance to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation next week.
Analysis
Cecconi was demoted to Triple-A Reno last week after a five-start run with Arizona, which ended with him giving up six runs in three of his final four outings. The 24-year-old had a 2.08 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in his other three appearances, so he's been a true boom-or-bust performer early in 2024. Gallen remains without a return timeline for now but is a strong bet to land on the injured list.
