Matt Wallner

Matt Wallner

26-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Minnesota Twins
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Wallner had a strong first full season in the majors and looks set to begin 2024 as the starting left fielder. After two short stints in the majors in April and May, Wallner was called up in July and took over the left field job by hitting 13 home runs with a .854 OPS in the second half. Wallner has outstanding power as measured by elite Avg. Exit Velocity (91.9 mph) and Barrel % (18.8%). He crushed right-handed pitching by hitting .281 with 12 home runs and a .970 OPS against righties. However, he struggled against lefties by hitting .118 with a .481 OPS against southpaws (although just 46 PA). Though he draws walks at a good rate (11.0% BB%) he strikes out too often (31.2% K%). He has one of the best throwing arm in the majors, but his range isn't great in the outfield. While he'll likely start in left field, he could be platooned and replaced for defensive purposes. Wallner has 30-home run power if he can improve against lefties and find more time in the lineup. Read Past Outlooks

Sent to IL with oblique strain
OFMinnesota Twins
Oblique
September 25, 2024
The Twins placed Wallner on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left oblique strain, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Wallner suffered the injury during a pinch-hitting appearance in Tuesday's loss to the Marlins, and it will cost him the remainder of the regular season. He would be eligible to return during the ALDS if replacing an injured player, although neither the Twins making it that far nor Wallner being healthy by then is guaranteed. Austin Martin has rejoined the active roster in Wallner's place.

Stat Review
How does Matt Wallner compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2020
It's incredibly fitting that the Twins signed Joey Gallo this offseason, as Wallner is extremely similar to Gallo from a height, size, handedness and tools standpoint. A 6-foot-5 lefty-hitting, righty-throwing right fielder with easy 70-grade power and a 70-grade arm, Wallner made his big-league debut in 2022 and hit 27 home runs in 128 games between Double-A and Triple-A. He had a 38.5 K% in 65 MLB plate appearances after logging a 27.5 K% at Triple-A. Wallner's 113.8 mph maximum exit velocity (93rd percentile) in the majors is a huge indicator in his favor, and he has the power to exceed that figure over a larger sample. Wallner won't have a large role to start the year and may open in Triple-A, but he would be a cheap source of power if he falls into at least the strong side of a platoon at some point this season.
Selected with the No. 39 overall pick out of Southern Mississippi, Wallner was seen as a potential two-way prospect (some teams liked him better on the mound) before he scrapped pitching his draft year due to a forearm strain. His plus arm and 70-grade raw power give him a chance to be an impactful right fielder if he hits enough. Wallner hit .258/.357/.452 with eight home runs and 80 strikeouts (27.5 K%) in 65 games across stops in the Appalachian and Midwest leagues. The left-handed hitter did not show significant splits in his debut, so his main focus in his first full season will be to keep the strikeouts in check while getting to his top tool more consistently in games. He makes for a nice flier in deeper dynasty leagues and should at least be on watch lists in shallower formats. Look for him to either return to Low-A or get assigned to High-A for his age-22 season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Seeking mental, physical reset
OFMinnesota Twins
April 17, 2024
Manager Rocco Baldelli hopes Wallner's demotion to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday will serve as a mental and physical reset, reports Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old impressed in 2023 with an .877 OPS and 14 homers in 76 games for the Twins, but he went 2-for-25 with 17 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances this year before being sent down. Strikeouts have always been a concern for Wallner -- he had a 31.5 percent strikeout rate last season and never had a rate below 26 percent in the minors -- but his struggles became untenable with Minnesota looking to shake off a slow start as a team. Wallner should receive another big-league chance at some point in 2024, assuming he gets back on track at Triple-A.
