2025 Fantasy Outlook
Wallner entered 2024 viewed as the starting left fielder after a breakout 2023 season. However, he looked so lost at the plate during spring training that he was quickly demoted to the minors in mid-April after going 2-for-25 with 17 strikeouts. It took him awhile to find his stroke in the minors, but he was finally called back up July 7 and hit .282 with 12 home runs and a.945 OPS the rest of the season. Wallner has tremendous power, ranking in the top 20 batters in baseball last season in both Average Exit Velocity and Hard Hit % (per Baseball Savant) for batters with at least his much playing time. His power has come with a high strikeout rate (36.4%) and low contact rate (56.8%) that make him prone to long slumps. While he draws a decent amount of walks (9.2%) he may have been lucky the last two seasons with a high BABIP (.389) and HR/FB rates (21.7%). He also struggles against lefties (career .510 OPS vs. LHP) which likely limits him to a platoon. While he lacks range in the outfield he has one of the best outfield arms in the majors. With the departure of Max Kepler, he'll get a shot to be the starting right fielder, likely in the strong side of a platoon. He could hit more than 30 home runs if he can improve against lefties and avoid prolonged slumps. Read Past Outlooks

Begins season in leadoff spot
Wallner started in right field and batted leadoff in Thursday's loss against the Cardinals. He went 0-for-4 with a walk.
ANALYSIS
Wallner usage in the leadoff spot against right-handed starters in spring training carried over into the regular season. He had a chance to tie the game with a runner on in the top of the ninth inning but struck out. Wallner will likely sit against most left-handed pitchers -- he had a .275/.387/.566 slash line against righties last year over 217 plate appearances, but just a .184/.295/.316 line in 44 PAs against southpaws.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2020
Wallner had a strong first full season in the majors and looks set to begin 2024 as the starting left fielder. After two short stints in the majors in April and May, Wallner was called up in July and took over the left field job by hitting 13 home runs with a .854 OPS in the second half. Wallner has outstanding power as measured by elite Avg. Exit Velocity (91.9 mph) and Barrel % (18.8%). He crushed right-handed pitching by hitting .281 with 12 home runs and a .970 OPS against righties. However, he struggled against lefties by hitting .118 with a .481 OPS against southpaws (although just 46 PA). Though he draws walks at a good rate (11.0% BB%) he strikes out too often (31.2% K%). He has one of the best throwing arm in the majors, but his range isn't great in the outfield. While he'll likely start in left field, he could be platooned and replaced for defensive purposes. Wallner has 30-home run power if he can improve against lefties and find more time in the lineup.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Seeking mental, physical reset
Manager Rocco Baldelli hopes Wallner's demotion to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday will serve as a mental and physical reset, reports Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old impressed in 2023 with an .877 OPS and 14 homers in 76 games for the Twins, but he went 2-for-25 with 17 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances this year before being sent down. Strikeouts have always been a concern for Wallner -- he had a 31.5 percent strikeout rate last season and never had a rate below 26 percent in the minors -- but his struggles became untenable with Minnesota looking to shake off a slow start as a team. Wallner should receive another big-league chance at some point in 2024, assuming he gets back on track at Triple-A.
