Kody Clemens

28-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Philadelphia Phillies
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Clemens got into 44 games last season and produced some career-best numbers, though that only amounted to a .219/.258/.447 slash line (good for a 92 wRC+). If he could play shortstop or center field, he'd project as a safe bench bat, but he's limited to the corners and the occasional start at second base. He's out of options, and if the Phillies want their final bench bat to hit right-handed given the lefty-heavy nature of their starting lineup, he could be stuck looking for a new team at the end of spring training. Earns bench spot

March 24, 2025
The Phillies informed Clemens on Monday that he has made the Opening Day roster, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Clemens nabbed the final bench spot over Buddy Kennedy after posting an .857 OPS with two home runs this spring. He will be used mostly in a pinch-hitting role while providing backup at multiple positions.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Clemens hit .145/.197/.308 for the struggling Tigers as a 26-year-old rookie in 2022, so it was something of a surprise that the defending National League champions elected to acquire him in January. He didn't make the Phillies' Opening Day roster but was called up just a week into the season after Darick Hall suffered a thumb injury. Clemens spent the bulk of the first half on the large side of a platoon at first base, but his .230/.277/.367 slash line and 73 wRC+ better suited a backup catcher than a regular at a corner position. Unsurprisingly, he found himself optioned in early July and never returned to the majors. Clemens' .256/.373/.564 slash line with 18 homers in 62 Triple-A games indicates he has little left to prove in the minors, but a strong Triple-A showing from a 27-year-old shouldn't be taken to mean that a big-league breakout is on the horizon. Clemens has shown poor plate discipline in 106 career MLB games, combining a 26.5 K% with a 5.8 BB%, and he hasn't made much quality contact, posting a 5.9% barrel rate.
Known for his famous father, seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, Kody Clemens can now say he made it to the majors as well after debuting in 2022. The younger Clemens appeared in 57 games for the Tigers and proceeded to slash .145/.197/.308 with five homes runs and 17 RBI. He was better at the Triple-A level, as he posted an .862 OPS for Toledo with 13 long balls across 60 games. Clemens also played well at Triple-A in 2021, so he doesn't have much more to prove in the minors, but the question now is whether he can consistently hit MLB pitching. A third-round pick in 2018, Clemens will turn 27 during the 2023 season, so we should have some answers to that question soon. He was traded to the Phillies by the Tigers in January, and his move to a contender clouds his path to have everyday role, though Bryson Stott certainly has yet to establish himself as a clear starter at second base. Clemens can also play at first and third base, as well as in the outfield, so a utility role may be in his future. He is mostly off the fantasy radar for now, but he could see his outlook improve during the season, though he made need an infield injury to see much of an opportunity.

3BPhiladelphia Phillies
January 2, 2025
The Phillies could seek to trade Clemens before Opening Day, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Clemens has been a useful part-time player for the Phillies at times over the last two seasons, but he's out of minor-league options, and the club already has an abundance of left-handed hitters. The right-handed hitting Weston Wilson and Buddy Kennedy appear to be better fits for the team's final bench spot.
