Justyn-Henry Malloy

24-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Detroit Tigers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Malloy saw time at third base, left field and right field at Triple-A last season, but he is a below-average defender at all three spots and fits best at designated hitter. That's a problem on a roster that has a locked in everyday first baseman (Spencer Torkelson) and also projects to include foundational bat-first players like Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith. Malloy, who turns 24 in February, slashed .277/.417/.474 with 23 home runs in 135 games at Triple-A. His 102.7 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, 109.9 mph maxEV, and 29.4 Hard% were not high-end marks for a potential designated hitter, but Malloy has had an OBP north of .400 at every stop above Single-A. Similarly to former Tigers DH Victor Martinez, he could potentially provide enough offensive value to DH even if he's not hitting more than 20 homers per season, but that involves Malloy essentially maxing out as a hitter. He doesn't need to be added to the 40-man roster until after the 2024 season for Rule 5 draft protection, so it will be up to him to improve enough defensively to force the issue this season. The Tigers recalled Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old will rejoin the MLB club for the start of September as rosters expand to 28 players. Malloy has a .698 OPS with eight home runs in 57 big-league games this season and should see semi-regular playing time in the outfield and at designated hitter.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
In the offseason deal that sent Joe Jimenez from Detroit to Atlanta, Malloy went from being the best hitter in an extremely depleted Atlanta farm system to being another bat-first position player in a mediocre Tigers system. Like his new org. mates Colt Keith and Jace Jung, it will have to be Malloy's offensive production that earns him playing time, as he is limited to left field and designated hitter. In his age-22 season, Malloy logged an excellent 32.0 Hard% while slashing .287/.406/.452 with 17 home runs in 133 games across the three highest levels of the minors. He doesn't chase often, but it would be nice if he swung at more pitches in the zone, as it's hard for extremely patient hitters to put up significant counting stats in the pitcher-friendly park in Detroit. Malloy isn't on the 40-man roster, but he could make his big-league debut this summer given the Tigers' lack of big-league talent.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Tough path to roster spot
OFDetroit Tigers
February 25, 2024
Malloy is exceedingly unlikely to make Detroit's Opening Day roster after the signing of Gio Urshela, per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com.
ANALYSIS
Malloy was never a likely bet to crack the roster, and the recent signing of Urshela only lengthened those odds. Malloy could still make his MLB debut at some point this season after he posted an .891 OPS with 23 homers in 135 games at Triple-A Toledo in 2023.
