2025 Fantasy Outlook
Profar wasn't guaranteed a starting role when he re-upped with the Padres on a one-year deal last offseason, but the veteran outfielder not only maintained an everyday spot in the lineup, he put together his first All-Star and Silver Slugger campaign while blowing away his previous career-best mark with an .839 OPS. Profar has always been adept at making contact and maintaining good plate discipline, and that was evidenced again in 2024 with his 15.1 percent strikeout rate along with a chase rate and whiff rate that were both in the top 90th percentile leaguewide. Where he really made strides, though, was in the quality of his contact -- Profar's average exit velocity (91.1 percent) ranked in the 80th percentile across baseball while his 44.4 percent hard-hit rate ranked in the 71st percentile. Those are stark contrasts to his previous campaigns, as Profar had never before ranked above even the 25th percentile in either category since Statcast was introduced. Such a dramatic improvement naturally begs for an explanation, and the answer for Profar likely lies in a change to his batting stance that also helped produce a career-best 7.2 percent barrel rate. While it needs to be noted that Profar's numbers tailed off to some extent late in the season, it should also be mentioned that he followed a miserable August during which he batted just .196 with a .689 OPS with a bounce-back September that included a .275 batting average and .818 OPS. Profar's outstanding campaign will likely land him a significant pay raise in 2025, and while his lack of speed, non-elite power and poor previous track record prevents him from being among fantasy's most desirable outfielders, he could settle within the top 25 to 30 at the position given his 2024 numbers and the underlying metrics that support them. Suspended 80 games for PEDs
Major League Baseball suspended Profar for 80 games Monday for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Profar is in the first year of a three-year, $42 million contract he signed with Atlanta after a career-best 2024 season in which he slashed .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs, 85 RBI and 10 stolen bases as a member of the Padres. He won't be eligible to return to action until late June, leaving fantasy managers with little choice but to drop him. Atlanta will attempt to get by with Jarred Kelenic, Bryan De La Cruz, Eli White and Stuart Fairchild on its outfield corners for now, although Alex Verdugo should arrive soon and Ronald Acuna (knee) is expected back from the injured list by early-to-mid-May.

Check out which players are earning unexpected playing time in the National League, including Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman.

Injuries have left openings in the Brewers' rotation, making righty Chad Patrick one of many intriguing adds this week on the starting pitching front.

Phillies lefty Cristopher Sanchez leads the first set of risers this season after adding two ticks of velocity over the winter and dominating the Rockies in his first start.

Better spots in the batting order have led to an early rise in value for some hitters in points leagues, including Lars Nootbaar of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Profar was a solid offensive piece for the Padres in 2022 with a 111 wRC+ in 152 contests, but he scuffled to a .242/.321/.368 slash line between the Rockies and Padres last season. He then re-signed with San Diego on a one-year deal for 2024, and the offseason departures of Juan Soto and Trent Grisham leave plenty of playing time in the outfield. Profar has a limited ceiling given his career .705 OPS and below-average power and speed, but he could be a volume contributor in deeper fantasy leagues. That's assuming, however, he can maintain a regular spot in the lineup.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Reunion with San Diego unlikely
The Padres re-signing Profar "seems unlikely at the moment," AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Padres are currently projected to be above the luxury tax threshold but would like to get under it, so a large contract offer to Profar probably isn't in the cards. Things could change if they're able to free up money by moving other contracts, but as things stand right now Profar appears likely to walk. The Astros and Blue Jays are among the teams to have shown interest in Profar, who slashed .280/.380/.459 with 24 homers and 10 steals in 158 games during the 2024 regular season.
