2025 Fantasy Outlook
Estes opened the 2024 season with Triple-A Las Vegas. He was called up in early May, then spent the rest of the season in the bigs. He experienced the ups and downs of most rookie hurlers, finishing with a 5.01 ERA, corroborated by his 5.29 xFIP and 5.04 SIERA. Estes 5.0 percent walk rate was excellent, but his 16.9 percent strikeout rate was the sixth lowest among pitchers tossing at least 120 innings. Home runs were a bigger problem. Estes fly-ball rate was 55.5 percent, so even with a below average 10.1 percent HR/FB mark, Estes 1.62 HR/9 was sixth highest among pitchers compiling 120 frames. Easier said than done, but perhaps a change in pitch would help induce more grounders and swinging strikes. Based on his pitch performance, lowering his 51.7 percent four-seam usage while upping his 33.2 percent slider deployment could be the elixir. For now, Estes is a risky streamer with a low strikeout rate. Read Past Outlooks

Wins final spot in rotation
Estes will open the season as the fifth starter in the Athletics rotation, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll receive the spot over Mitch Spence, who will begin the season in the bullpen. Estes spent the bulk of the 2024 campaign in the rotation, finishing with a 5.01 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 92:27 K:BB over 127.2 innings. His leash on a starting job could be fairly short.

The American League waiver wire is packed with options as Opening Day approaches, and the return of Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians should settle their murky right field situation.

Spots are up for grabs around the American League West, including in the Rangers rotation, where the young and talented Kumar Rocker may face an uphill battle to break camp in the majors.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Estes was traded to Oakland in the Matt Olson trade before the 2022 season, and he's gone from 16th round pick back in 2019 to a player that made two starts for the A's in 2023 that has a chance to win a spot in the A's rotation to start 2024. The 22-year-old can get his fastball up to 96 mph, and he complements that heater with a slider that gets above-average grades along with a change that continues to make progress. He generally throws strikes with all three pitches, but his command is slightly behind his control. Estes is a name to monitor in the coming years in dynasty leagues, but there's very little chance of him being a viable fantasy option in 2024 even if he does earn a starting gig.
