Jairo Iriarte

Jairo Iriarte

23-Year-Old PitcherRP
Chicago White Sox AAA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Iriarte did not cover himself in glory in his first year with the White Sox after getting dealt from San Diego as part of the return for Dylan Cease. He was fortunate to log a 3.71 ERA as a starter at Double-A and a 1.50 ERA in six innings out of the big-league bullpen, but his 12.2 K-BB% and 17 hit batsmen in 126 innings at Double-A and his -6.7 K-BB% in MLB tell a much different story. There were significant questions about Iriarte's ability to make it as a starter at the time of the trade, and it now seems more likely than not that he'll end up a reliever. Iriarte has never pitched at Triple-A, so he'll likely either make the big club as a reliever or stay stretched out at Triple-A. If his command were to improve, he has the stuff (three above-average pitches) to find success in the rotation. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Iriarte's control problems persisted his spring, as he walked five and hit a batter while yielding three runs over his 4.1 innings of work. The White Sox plan to continue developing the 23-year-old as a starting pitcher for now, but a shift to the bullpen might eventually come.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Iriarte's stuff clearly belongs in the big leagues, it's just a question of whether he fits best as a starter or reliever. A 6-foot-2 righty with a mid-90s fastball that could touch triple digits and two quality secondary pitches in his slider and changeup, Iriarte logged 90.1 innings last season across High-A and Double-A after logging 91.1 innings in 2022. He threw three or fewer innings in 14 of his 27 appearances, often by design, but in some cases due to poor command. It's possible he will be San Diego's closer of the future, but they'll keep developing him as a starter for another year. He will need to improve on the 13.5 percent walk rate he logged at Double-A, but if he does, he could join the big-league rotation this summer.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to have limited usage
PChicago White Sox  AAA
September 10, 2024
Manager Grady Sizemore indicated the White Sox aren't likely to throw Iriarte on back-to-back days or for more than an inning at a time, reports Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old was called up by the White Sox on Sept. 1 when rosters expanded to 28 players, and he's given up an earned run with a 4:6 K:BB over 2.2 frames in his three appearances. Iriarte had been working out of the rotation for Double-A Birmingham prior to the promotion and had a 3.71 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 122:57 K:BB across 126 innings. The right-hander is one of the organization's top prospects, so it's no surprise his usage will be monitored carefully down the stretch.
