2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gilbert makes for a tricky evaluation heading into 2025, as he hasn't performed at the level of a top prospect since his Double-A run in 2023 after getting traded to the Mets at the deadline, but injuries have played a role. An early-April hamstring strain sidelined Gilbert until mid-July last season, and he slashed .215/.313/.393 with 10 home runs and three steals in 56 games at Triple-A to close the year. Nine of his 10 homers came in his final 30 games, which is a promising sign, but it was a small sample against watered down pitching late in the year. Seen as a potential five-category outfielder when he was drafted in the first round by the Astros in 2022, Gilbert no longer shows off plus speed on the bases, having stolen 11 bases in 151 career games at Double-A and Triple-A. His .234 BABIP at Triple-A tanked his overall slash line, and his 20.6 percent strikeout rate and 10.1 percent walk rate were strong marks for a player making their Triple-A debut. An important factor working in Gilbert's favor is that he's an above-average defender in center field and right field and he's in an organization that strongly values defense, so he could still be a regular or strong-side platoon option even if he's only hitting in the bottom third of the lineup. Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo are locked into everyday roles, but there should be a chance for Gilbert in the majors sometime this summer if he earns it. Read Past Outlooks

Could miss all of Grapefruit League
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Gilbert (hamstring) may not appear in any Grapefruit League games, but the outfielder is expected to be ready to play when Triple-A Syracuse opens its season March 28, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gilbert was limited to just 56 games at the Triple-A level in 2024, with a hamstring issue costing him nearly three months of action. Though Gilbert was active to finish the season, he acknowledged prior to the start of spring training that he hadn't yet made a full recovery from the hamstring injury, prompting the Mets to take a cautious approach with his usage during camp. Gilbert hasn't suffered any reported setbacks since reporting to spring training, so as long as he's able to get some at-bats in on the back fields of camp in the weeks to come, he should be ready to handle an everyday role in the Syracuse outfield once the season gets underway.

2023
The Astros' first-round pick in 2022 and the headliner to New York in the deal that sent Justin Verlander back to Houston, Gilbert had peaks and valleys last season, but he finished well and appears to be almost big-league ready. The strong, athletic 5-foot-9 center fielder can handle all three outfield spots and could turn into a five-tool player. From June 25 on, Gilbert slashed .311/.386/.545 with 11 home runs and five steals in 59 games at Double-A. He had an 18.9 percent strikeout rate over that stretch, so the 23-year-old lefty hitter may be poised to keep mashing upper-minors pitching until the Mets start his clock. No longer a plus runner, Gilbert has good instincts on the bases, but he may be capped at around 15 steals in the majors. Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marie are locked in as everyday players when healthy, but Gilbert could grab the other spot sometime in the first half if he performs as expected. Long term, he could be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter, but he would probably be a bottom-third hitter initially.

Still dealing with hamstring issues
Gilbert is still not fully recovered from the hamstring injury that derailed his 2024 campaign, and the Mets are bringing him along slowly in camp as a result, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. "It's just getting over the hump," Gilbert said this week. "It's nothing serious at this point. Sometimes injuries linger a little bit. Once we get across the finish line, we'll be in a good spot and unleash a little bit."
