2024 Fantasy Outlook
As a righty whose changeup is his lone quality offering, it's difficult to project Vines to have consistent success as a big-league starter. He could be a useful spot starter in favorable matchups, given how good Atlanta is, but Vines' averaged 90 mph on his fastball last year, which is nearly unheard of for a successful righty starter in today's game. He has decent command, but it's not pinpoint command, which he would need to have to make this pitch mix work regularly against big-league hitters. Unless Vines sees a velocity spike, he's best used as a streamer in deep leagues when Atlanta's rotation is decimated by injuries. Read Past Outlooks
Outrighted to Double-A
Atlanta outrighted Vines to Double-A Mississippi on Friday, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a little surprising that Vines passed through waivers unclaimed, but he will remain in the organization as rotation depth at Mississippi. Vines, 26, holds a 5.82 ERA and 23:11 K:BB over 34 innings during parts of two seasons at the major-league level.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Vines is one of the most underrated pitching prospects in the minors. The 6-foot-1 righty threw a career-high 140.2 innings last season across Double-A and Triple-A, logging a 1.23 WHIP, 26.5 K% and 7.5 BB%. Vines works with a low-90s fastball, one of the best changeups in the minors, and a third-pitch slider. He doesn't have much margin for error with the fastball, but his changeup generates extreme chase rates and allows the fastball to play up. Atlanta has plenty of rotation depth, with guys like Bryce Elder and Ian Anderson on the outside looking in, but Vines could be ready to enter the fray sometime this summer.
