2025 Fantasy Outlook
After a standout 2023, Doval took major steps backwards last season. His 14.4 percent walk rate was second worst among relief pitchers, which attributed to inflated ratios (4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and an eventual demotion from closing duties. Doval was even optioned to the minors for a few weeks, but the 27-year-old still led San Francisco with 23 saves (T-10th in the league) and a 63.9 percent team save share that ranked 13th among closers. The only thing working for Doval was his slider (.184 BAA, 45 percent whiff rate), and he threw the pitch more than 50 percent of the time. Unfortunately, his cutter (.284 BAA, .552 SLG) and sinker (.375 BAA, .531 SLG) got crushed, the latter regressing significantly since its introduction in 2022. Doval should give Ryan Walker competition for the closer role during spring training. Improving his command would go a long way towards reclaiming at least a share of the role he once held. Loss, blown save in Yankees debut
Doval (4-3) was charged with the loss and a blown save in Friday's 13-12 loss to the Marlins, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk with no strikeouts in one-third of an inning.
Analysis
Doval disappointed in his Yankees debut, taking his fifth blown save of the season. The hierarchy of New York's new-look bullpen following the acquisition of David Bednar is not entirely settled, though it's worth noting that Doval has struggled quite a bit recently and is seeing his fantasy stock drop. Since the start of June, the right-hander has a 5.64 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB across 22.1 innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Tied for 2nd in the majors with a career-high 39 saves, Doval cemented himself as one of the top closers in the game last season. After introducing a sinker to his aresenal during the second-half of 2022, the pitch wasn't as effective last year (.303 BAA), but Doval generated a career-best 49.3% whiff rate on his slider, while his 100-mph cutter was the best it has ever been. The 26-year-old struck out far more batters with his cutter than years past, with 36 of his career-high 87 strikeouts coming via the pitch. Still, Doval mixed his three pitches quite evenly, making it more difficult for opposing hitters to predict what was coming. Walks are still an issue for Doval, leading to a higher WHIP than you'd like to see for a closer, but he balances that out with a 50-plus perecent groundball rate. Doval led qualified relievers with a 2.14 gmLI and he has little competition in San Francisco, thus making him a back-end top 10 closer for 2024.

Analysis
The Giants are not committed to selling even as they currently six five games out of a wild-card spot, but they could deal from their bullpen -- which has been a strength -- while still clinging to faint playoff hopes. Doval has been the Giants' primary closer this season, collecting 15 saves while posting a 3.15 ERA and 47:24 K:BB over 45.2 innings. He is under team control through 2027.
