2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tied for 2nd in the majors with a career-high 39 saves, Doval cemented himself as one of the top closers in the game last season. After introducing a sinker to his aresenal during the second-half of 2022, the pitch wasn't as effective last year (.303 BAA), but Doval generated a career-best 49.3% whiff rate on his slider, while his 100-mph cutter was the best it has ever been. The 26-year-old struck out far more batters with his cutter than years past, with 36 of his career-high 87 strikeouts coming via the pitch. Still, Doval mixed his three pitches quite evenly, making it more difficult for opposing hitters to predict what was coming. Walks are still an issue for Doval, leading to a higher WHIP than you'd like to see for a closer, but he balances that out with a 50-plus perecent groundball rate. Doval led qualified relievers with a 2.14 gmLI and he has little competition in San Francisco, thus making him a back-end top 10 closer for 2024. Read Past Outlooks
Shaky in 23rd save
Doval earned the save in Friday's 2-1 win at Kansas City while allowing one run on no hits and two walks over one inning. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After Ryan Walker had thrown 35 pitches over the previous two games and blown a save via walk-off homer Thursday, Doval was called upon in the ninth Friday. The former Giants closer looked rusty, as he opened the ninth with back-to-back walks. A groundout allowed both runners to move up a base, setting the table for a Garrett Hampson sacrifice fly to drive in the Royals' first run. However, Doval recovered to punch out the next batter, Tommy Pham, to end the game. Since being recalled from Triple-A on Aug. 24, Doval has pitched to a 7.36 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 11 innings. He remains, at best, a secondary option for saves in San Francisco so long as Walker is around.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Despite some initial uncertainty around the Giants closer role at the start of 2022, expectations for Doval were high in his first full big league season. The 25-year-old quickly solidified himself as San Francisco's primary closer, tallying 27 of the Giants' 39 saves for a 69.2% share that was ninth highest among closers. Doval's slider was nastier than ever - in fact, it was one of the best pitches in the league as measured by Statcast run value (-17). However, his cutter wasn't performing to expectations (.340 BAA) despite his 99th percentile velocity. A two-week rough stretch forced Doval to rethink his approach and he introduced a new sinker in mid-July. The pitch was a game changer for him, as it produced a -17.3 degree average launch angle that was the lowest against any pitch in the majors (min 50 BBE). With an already intimidating arsenal, the sky is the limit for Doval in 2023. He should be among the top 10 closers drafted.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Possible trade piece?
According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants may be willing to trade Doval ahead of the July 30 deadline.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander totaled 66 saves with a 2.73 ERA during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, but he's been a bit less reliable this year with a 4.15 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. Still, Doval could be one of the San Francisco's more valuable trade chips. The question is whether or not the Giants will be sellers at the deadline. They currently sit three games back of the final wild-card spot but have an uninspiring 43-45 record.
