2025 Fantasy Outlook
After being called up in June, Povich initially struggled against major-league hitters, going 1-7 with a 6.58 ERA over his first 11 starts. The lefty was demoted by the Orioles several times before finding his groove in September when he posted a 2.60 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 32:8 K:BB over 27.2 innings. Povich, a third-round pick in 2021, lacks high-end velocity but throws the kitchen sink. His minor-league numbers hint at room for growth with his strikeout rate and the team context is favorable -- even as the left-field wall in Baltimore is moving in. His performance over the final month might give him the inside track for one of the final rotation spots, but Povich will have to solidify his role in spring training. Read Past Outlooks

Secures rotation spot
GM Mike Elias announced Sunday that Povich will begin the season as Baltimore's No. 5 starter, and the left-hander will make his season debut in the home opener against Boston on March 31, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old earned the final rotation spot over Albert Suarez, who was the early favorite for the job after Grayson Rodriguez was shut down with elbow inflammation. Povich had a 5.20 ERA in 16 regular-season starts as a rookie last year, but he had a strong showing during spring training with a 3.07 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB across 14.2 innings. However, the Orioles signed veteran starter Kyle Gibson on Friday, so Povich may need a strong start to the campaign to retain the rotation spot.

Tarik Skubal's Cy Young defense gets off to a tough start this weekend as he takes on the defending champions in Dodger Stadium. Where does he rank in Todd Zola's first pitcher rankings of the year?

Catch up on the players who won jobs in the final days of camp around the American League, including Cam Smith of the Astros.

The American League waiver wire is packed with options as Opening Day approaches, and the return of Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians should settle their murky right field situation.

Several job battles have been settled around the American League, including the Royals' fifth starter job, which appears to have been won by Kris Bubic.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
While Povich lacks a truly special pitch, the 6-foot-3 lefty throws four or five quality pitches and showed improved control early this year in a return to Triple-A as a 24-year-old. He had a 14.7 percent walk rate in 10 starts at Triple-A last year and sports a 9.1 percent walk rate through 11 starts in 2024. This significant improvement suggests Povich should be a good bet to make it as a starter long term, and he could be given that first opportunity before the All-Star break. He throws his 91-94 mph four-seamer over 40 percent of the time while mixing in his cutter, changeup, sweeper and curveball. It seemed like Chayce McDermott and Povich each had a similar chance of breaking through as quality starters for the Orioles this year, but McDermott's control has regressed while the younger Povich's has improved, so Povich is currently the top pitcher in the system to stash.
