Buddy Kennedy

Buddy Kennedy

26-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Philadelphia Phillies
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Kennedy earned a small handful of MLB plate appearances for the third straight season, and again did very little with them, going 2-for-10 for the Tigers and 2-for-11 after being designated for assignment and dealt to the Phillies. He hit a respectable .272/.376/.458 (good for a 119 wRC+) at the Triple-A level between the two organizations, but he's at best fighting for a bench role with the Phillies this spring. Philadelphia could potentially use a short-side platoon partner for Max Kepler in left field, but Kennedy has limited experience in the outfield, so he's probably an underdog in that fight. The Phillies selected Kennedy's contract from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy earned a promotion after slashing .283/.388/.447 with eight home runs and a 41:31 K:BB over 61 games with Lehigh Valley, although he has cooled off in June with a .185/.323/.259 batting line. The 26-year-old will serve as a reserve infielder.

Stat Review
How does Buddy Kennedy compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The best skill Kennedy has shown during his time in the minors has been his ability to draw a walk, as he drew free passes at a 16.4 percent rate in 2023 at the Triple-A level and boasts a 12.6 percent walk rate over six seasons on the farm. He did club 22 home runs and stole 16 bases between the High- and Double-A levels in 2021, but both of those numbers look like clear outliers in his career. Kennedy did very little in spot duty with the Diamondbacks the last two seasons and then jumped to the Oakland and St. Louis organizations via waivers. The 25-year-old is part of a crowded competition for a reserve infielder role but seems likely to report to Triple-A Memphis to begin the 2024 campaign.
Kennedy looked to be working his way into being a decent prospect in 2021 when he posted a .907 OPS with 22 home runs and 16 stolen bases between the High- and Double-A levels as a 22-year-old. He regressed in 2022, though, both during his time at Triple-A and a brief run in the big leagues, leading to him losing his spot on the 40-man roster this offseason. Hailing from the same high school as Mike Trout, Kennedy offers a little versatility and speed but seems destined to be a fantasy afterthought even if he gets another chance.

Not to be overshadowed
3BArizona Diamondbacks
March 29, 2023
Kennedy was sent to the minors Friday but on the heels of a stellar spring training. Kennedy slashed .424/.525/.606 in 40 plate appearances.
ANALYSIS
Much of the attention throughout Arizona's spring training has gone to young phenom Corbin Carroll, but Kennedy did his fair share of booming. Kennedy posted a less inspiring .217/.287./.325 slash across 94 plate appearances last season, but the 24-year-old is likely to factor into the Diamondbacks' plans sooner rather than later. It's a surprisingly crowded infield depth chart in Arizona, however, so his exact usage remains to be determined.
