Shifts to third base
Toro started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Toro, who had been the regular starter at first base, shifted to third base while Romy Gonzalez, fresh off the injured list, started at first. Toro is batting .306 with an .822 OPS over 19 games since his contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester. The two could share the position going forward after Red Sox manager Alex Cora scrapped a plan to give Kristian Campbell starts there.

While elite prospect promotions and big-name injury returns lay ahead later this summer, players like the Minnesota Twins' Matt Wallner can provide a boost to fantasy rosters in the meantime.

Tuesday's top MLB DFS options on FanDuel include the surging Rafael Devers as the Boston Red Sox take on the Milwaukee Brewers.

Injuries create opportunities, and Boston Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer is one of a number of players joining the American League talent pool this week looking to take advantage.

Toro was dealt to Milwaukee last winter but played in just nine big-league games during 2023, though he took advantage of those opportunities by going 8-for-18 with two homers. The 28-year-old was then traded to the A's in November, which provides an immediate boost to his outlook for playing time in 2024. Toro also had a strong campaign at the Triple-A level last year with a .291/.374/.471 slash line and 10 home runs in 96 games. He has a .636 OPS in 271 big-league games during his career and isn't guaranteed playing time in Oakland, so a wait-and-see approach is likely appropriate rather than risking draft capital outside of a late-round dart throw.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Primed for big role?
Romy Gonzalez could be placed on the injured list Saturday due to a back issue, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, which would likely result in increased playing time at first base for Toro.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez recently stepped in as the primary first baseman with Triston Casas lost for the year due to a knee issue, and it appears Boston will have to go even further down the depth chart at the position. Toro had his contract selected by the Red Sox last weekend and has gone 2-for-14 in his first five games of the season. He has a .635 OPS across parts of seven big-league seasons, so Toro doesn't seem likely to get an extended leash if he's unable to get on track early.
