Delay spent the 2023 season as the Pirates' backup catcher, initially to Austin Hedges and ultimately to Endy Rodriguez. That will be the best-case scenario for him in 2024, as a combination of Rodriguez and Henry Davis is almost certain to account for the majority of plate appearances behind the dish. To dampen Delay's outlook further, the Pirates signed Ali Sanchez to a one-year major league deal early this offseason, leaving him most likely to start the season in the minors.
