The guy who was once the biggest piece of the Blake Snell to San Diego deal is now toiling in a middle relief role for one of the worst bullpens in baseball. Patino has consistently struggled with his command around injuries and 2023 was no different no matter who his employer was. Patino walked 56 batters around 68 strikeouts in the 81.1 innings he pitched in Durham, Charlotte, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. His split-change has shown promise, but he does not get to use the pitch as much as he would like because he falls behind in the count too frequently and has to use fastballs to catch back up. Chicago needs a replacement for Reynaldo Lopez and perhaps they envisions Patino as that guy with his raw stuff if the coaching staff and front office can realign what Tampa Bay could not. Until they do, you can safely ignore Patino in all formats outside of 50 round draft and holds. Read Past Outlooks
