Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Atlanta - Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth inning Thursday to pick up his 27th save, the most ever for a rookie prior to the All-Star break. Kimbrel has been dominant over the last couple weeks - over his last 13 appearances, all of them scoreless, Kimbrel has allowed just six runners to reach base while picking up nine saves and posting a sparkling 22:3 K:BB ratio.

Arizona - David Hernandez pitched a clean ninth inning Thursday to pick up his fourth save in six days. Hernandez will likely cede the closer's role back to J.J. Putz (arm) when he returns from the DL, but he has proven to be a key addition for those who snapped him up in the wake of Putz's injury.

Toronto - Frank Francisco entered Thursday's game in the ninth inning with a four-run lead, and though he was charged with neither a blown save or a loss, each of the three runners he allowed to reach base scored, two on a walk-off grand slam by Travis Hafner after Francisco exited the game. Francisco has allowed five runs over his last three appearances and currently owns a 5.92 ERA and 1.85 WHIP, so don't be surprised if the Blue Jays go in a different direction next time they need to close out a game.

Recommended Pickup

Mike Trout, OF, LAA - In need of an outfielder after Peter Boujos strained his hamstring during Thursday's game, the Angels decided to bring up Trout from Double-A Arkansas. The move was somewhat surprising considering Trout won't turn 20 until next month, but the Angels decided to give him a shot in the bigs after watching him hit .324 with nine home runs, 32 extra base hits, and 27 RBI in 75 games with Arkansas this season. Players at Trout's age have had trouble adjusting to major league pitching - Alex Rodriguez hit just .232 as a 19-year-old - but he is clearly a special talent who excels in almost every aspect of the game (he also stole 28 bases with Arkansas). While Trout's age, and the Angels' desire to keep his service time down, may have him ticketed back to the minors when Bourjos returns, it's also possible that he plays well enough to force the Angels into keeping him around. Trout is one of the top two prospects in baseball, and though it may take him some time to adjust to major league pitching, he could provide immediate help in the stolen base category with regular playing time. Trout is long gone in keeper leagues, but he is the type of player to take a gamble on in standard/mixed leagues if still available. Don't hesitate to pick him up if you can find a spot for him on your roster.
