Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Atlanta - The Braves wanted to give Craig Kimbrel a break Thursday after throwing 28 pitches the night before, so Jonny Venters was called upon to get the save. Venters came through with a perfect frame to lock down the victory. Though Kimbrel has struggled slightly and Venters has been nearly unhittable, posting an absurd 0.47 ERA and 0.72 WHIP through 38.2 IP, manger Fredi Gonzalez maintained that Kimbrel is his closer.

Arizona - David Hernandez picked up the save Thursday with J.J. Putz (back) unavailable, but Putz should be ready to pitch next time the Diamondbacks find themselves in a save situation.

Philadelphia - Ryan Madson blew the save Thursday, but he avoided a potential loss when what looked to be a home run by Chicago's Tyler Colvin was overturned by an umpire review. Madson has allowed at least an earned run in four of his last nine appearances, but he remains the top option in the ninth inning for the time being.

Recommended Pickup

Mike Moustakas, 3B, KC - The Royals promoted Moustakas, the number nine prospect in Baseball America's preseason prospect rankings, to the majors Friday. Like teammate Eric Hosmer, Moustakas comes to the majors after dominating Triple-A pitching. He had already hit 10 home runs in 55 Triple-A games this season, a year after posting a .322 batting average with 36 home runs and 124 RBI over 118 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Moustakas will take over as the regular third baseman for the Royals and should bat in the middle of the lineup. With many of the teammates ahead of him having good seasons, he should have plenty of opportunities to produce. Given the power numbers Moustakas is capable of providing, he deserves a look in nearly all formats.

Other recent recommendations:Anthony Rizzo, Brennan Boesch, Charlie Morton, Dee Gordon, Freddie Freeman
