Reds LHP Andrew Abbott and Padres RHP Nick Pivetta face off in this matchup at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, and with a projected total of just 7.5 runs, offensive expectations are fittingly muted.
Abbott has been the more vulnerable of the two pitchers recently, as he's been touched up for seven and five earned runs in two of his last three starts. The left-hander has otherwise been on a solid run of pitching since just before the All-Star break, as in the eight other starts he's logged since July 9, he's surrendered three earned runs or less in seven of them.
Abbott has been a little sharper at home, but still has a solid 3.41 ERA and 1.03 WHIP on the road, along with a higher K/9 (8.5) when traveling then at home (7.9). However, Pivetta has been a cut above, already compiling a career-high 13 wins and having put together a particularly masterful body of work at home, where the veteran righty boasts an 8-1 mark, 2.39 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 10.0 K/9 across 90.1 innings.
Given Pivetta's track record and the fact the Reds have a 27.2 percent strikeout rate, .298 wOBA and -6.9 wRAA on the road against righties since Aug. 1, I'm in the camp of an SGP that has San Diego ahead at the end of a relatively low-scoring five innings. Additionally, with Pivetta having logged at least six frames in nine of his last 10 starts alone and 20 occasions overall, I like his outs recorded prop as well.

The Rockies are essentially outmanned in terms of the starting pitcher matchup nearly every time they take the field, and Wednesday is a glaring example. The all-southpaw matchup between Kyle Freeland and Blake Snell tilts heavily toward the Dodgers, and that offers us the path to a couple of different wagers.
For our same-game parlay, we're simply banking on Los Angeles at least mildly capitalizing on the highly favorable matchup against Freeland to muster a minimum of four runs. The Blue Crew is averaging an MLB-high 5.6 runs per home game, and current Dodgers hitters have a collective .787 OPS against Freeland in a sizable sample of 211 plate appearances in which they've laced 24 of 51 hits for extra bases.

Freeland has been much better of late – he just twirled an eight-inning gem where he blanked the Padres his last time out – but he still has a 2-8 record and 1.6 HR/9 across 79 road frames. The Dodgers are tied for third in all of MLB with 3.05 runs per first five innings per home game as well, and Snell checks in with a 3-1 record, 1.78 ERA and 0.4 HR/9 over 25.1 home frames thus far this season.
Current Rockies hitters have been limited to a collective .129 average and .182 OBP by Snell in 33 career plate appearances, a sample where Snell has racked up an astounding 21 strikeouts. With Colorado also averaging an MLB-low 1.4 runs per first five innings per road game and unlikely to cause Snell enough trouble to prevent him from getting to at least 5.2 innings, we have the foundation for both our bets.
