Winning streak snapped at three
Magomedov lost to Joe Pyfer via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:44 of Round 2 at UFC 320 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Magomedov probably would have been finished quickly had Pyfer just unloaded on the feet from the start, but he instead tried to grapple, and that gave Abus an opening. He picked up a takedown and 2:36 worth of control time in the opening frame, but Pyfer landed a knockdown early in Round 2, and Magomedov was never able to work his way back to his feet. Magomedov is not without talent, but he's 35 years old and has terrible cardio to go along with questionable durability. He's 4-3 in his first seven UFC fights and figures to hover around the .500 mark moving forward.

Pulls upset of Michel Pereira
Magomedov defeated Michel Pereira via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
It's the biggest win of Magomedov's career. While the result is great, it was clearly aided by the baffling incompetence of Pereira. Abus was fairly active in Round 1 and predictably slowed as the fight progressed. Any opponent that floored the gas pedal likely would have had Magomedov in serious trouble, but Pereira was either unwilling or unable to do so, and thus the result was academic. The 34-year-old Russian is a reasonable one-round option, but he has yet to show any gas tank whatsoever, and that's going to make it awful difficult to have continued success. He improves to 4-2 in the UFC, with the defeats coming against a former world champion in Sean Strickland and a guy that is nearly certain to challenge for a belt in the future in Caio Borralho.

Coming off two consecutive wins, Magomedov will carry a five-inch reach advantage over Pereira, who lost his most recent fight but had won eight consecutive bouts prior to the loss.

Secures second straight win
Magomedov defeated Brunno Ferreira via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:14 of Round 3 at UFC 308 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
Magomedov has very poor cardio, but he does possess a well-rounded offensive skill set, and we saw that in that fight. He made some headway on the feet in Round 1 before Ferreira came storming back in the second frame. Abus wisely went back to his grappling game in Round 3, picking up a pair of takedowns before eventually choking Ferreira out with the arm-triangle. Already 34 years old, Magomedov's long-term upside is capped by his age, but he's now 3-2 in his first five UFC bouts and the two setbacks have come against elite competition in Sean Strickland and Caio Borralho.

Magomedov's new opponent needed a replacement for the latter's next fight, which was scheduled against Roman Kopylov. Magomedov began his 2024 strong with an easy win over Warlley Alves at UFC Vegas 92.
