Secures long-term deal
CEdmonton Oilers
June 27, 2025
Frederic inked an eight-year, $30.8 million contract with Edmonton on Friday, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Frederic played in just 23 games for the Oilers this year, including the postseason, after being acquired by the club at the trade deadline. Apparently, that was enough for the organization to commit to the 27-year-old center long term. In those outings, the St. Louis native generated one goal and three assists while dishing out 87 hits. It's that physicality that Frederic brings to the table as he heads into the 2025-26 campaign.

The 2023-24 campaign was a career year for Frederic, who set new personal bests with 18 goals, 22 assists, 82 games played and 204 hits. The physicality of the 26-year-old certainly bolsters his fantasy value in formats that utilize defensive stats. The knock on the St. Louis native's game is a lack of power-play opportunities, as he has notched just two points with the man advantage in his six-year NHL career. As such, even if Frederic can reproduce a 40-point campaign in 2024-25, he won't offer significant fantasy value. A third-line role seems likely for Frederic for most of the year but injuries could open up a top-six spot periodically - though he is far from a lock to earn a promotion even when injuries crop up among the forward ranks.
Frederic gained a little more traction in the NHL last year, posting 31 points, 105 hits, 120 shots on goal and 57 PIM over 79 games. He's not exactly Tom Wilson, but he's got a blend of physicality and burgeoning offense that could make him a solid middle-six forward as the Bruins work through a transitional year following the retirements of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. A natural center, Frederic's play fits better on the wing. At 25 years old, there's some room for him to grow into a 20-goal, 40-point, 150-hit power forward on the third line, though it remains unlikely he'll see much power-play time to help prop up his scoring numbers.
Frederic has appeared in just 17 games at the NHL level over the last two years, and he's still in search of his first point for the Bruins. A first-round pick in 2016, it's likely Frederic makes an impact at some point, but the Bruins have plenty of center depth heading into 2020-21. Barring injuries higher up the depth chart, Frederic will likely settle for a taxi-squad or minor-league job this season. He produced eight goals and 32 points with AHL Providence in 59 games last year -- the scoring potential is there, but he's more of a defensive forward with little hope of more than a bottom-six role in the near future.
Frederic failed to record a point in 15 NHL games last season, but did manage to log 14 goals and 25 points in 55 AHL contests. The 2016 first-rounder could emerge as a solid two-way power forward down the road, but for now, the 6-foot-2, 203-pounder is off the fantasy radar given his lack of production at the top level. The 21-year-old has a chance to earn a spot with the big club out of training camp, but he'll need to display improved instincts on offense in order for that to happen.
Following a strong two-year stint at the University of Wisconsin, Frederic logged five goals and eight points in 13 regular-season games down the stretch for AHL Providence in 2018. The 20-year-old is a big-bodied center who some within the B's organization believe could develop into a Jordan Staal-type down the road. The Bruins raised some eyebrows when they selected Frederic 29th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, but since then, he's displayed a developing scoring touch that could translate into a top-six role in Boston. In the short term, Frederic should have a chance to compete for the team's No. 3 center job previously handled by Riley Nash.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Finalizing long-term deal
CEdmonton Oilers
June 27, 2025
Frederic and the Oilers are expected to announce an eight-year deal worth slightly under $32 million Friday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Frederic and Edmonton have reportedly been working on the terms of his new deal for a while now but seem to be finally getting over the goal line. An eight-year commitment for a player who has reached the 40-point threshold once in his seven-year NHL career seems a bit much. Still, he's coming in at a decent cap hit at less than a $4 million AAV that will only get better as the NHL salary cap continues to rise over the next several seasons.
