Tynan finally got his first three games of NHL experience last year, but failed to get on the scoresheet with the Blue Jackets. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound forward doesn't possess the elite skill level that has allowed other players of his stature to flourish, topping 40 points in the AHL over each of the past three seasons but failing to reach 50. Unless he takes a major step forward at age 25, don't expect Tynan to dress for many games in Vegas.
After scoring 38 points in 40 games as a senior for Notre Dame, Tynan got his feet wet in the AHL at the end of last season. The undersized forward will hope to follow in Cam Atkinson's skates and become an effective two-way winger for the Blue Jackets, but he's likely a year or two away from NHL duty. He will likely spend the season playing for Springfield in the AHL.
Tynan's production has declined over the course of his college career, and his prospect status may be waning. The undersized playmaker should still get a chance to show what he can do in the pros after he graduates, but a big senior year for Notre Dame would reassure the new Blue Jackets front office that he's worth the investment.
A speedy but undersized center, Tynan has been an offensive dynamo in college, but he'll have to prove himself all over again in a couple of years when he turns pro. As with all waterbug types, he's a long shot to have a productive NHL career, but Tynan has shown the will and work ethic necessary to be one of the exceptions. Don't write him off.
A waterbug who plays with a mountain-sized chip on his shoulder, Tynan led all NCAA freshman last season, and his Notre Dame squad, with 23 goals and 54 points in 44 games. He'll have to prove himself every step up the ladder due to his size, but Tynan's determination and drive will serve him well as he claws his way towards the NHL.
