Sean Kuraly

Sean Kuraly

31-Year-Old CenterC
Columbus Blue Jackets
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Throughout Kuraly's eight-year NHL career, he has never reached the 80-game threshold, a trend that continued last season when he played in just 62 regular-season contests for the Blue Jackets. As such, the 31-year-old forward failed to reach the 20-point mark for the first time since 2020-21 when he was limited to a mere 47 games with the Bruins. Fantasy managers probably should be expecting Kuraly to miss time at some point during the 2024-25 campaign given his history. The New York native doesn't have a role with the man advantage, which further restricts his offensive upside. Kuraly does dish out a fair number of hits (156 last year) but overall won't offer much in the way of fantasy value. Read Past Outlooks

Kuraly scored a goal and blocked two shots in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Kuraly has earned all three of his points this season over his last four games. The 31-year-old center remains firmly in a fourth-line role, with his physical play and defensive work making him a lock for the lineup. He's supplied just four shots on net to go with 15 hits, six blocked shots and a plus-4 rating through 10 appearances this season.

Kuraly once again filled a depth role in his second season in Columbus, appearing in 71 games. He missed about three weeks in March with an oblique issue but was otherwise healthy. Kuraly's numbers were right in line with what we have come to expect from him (11 goals, 20 points, 187 hits), but the really terrifying statistic was his minus-28 rating. Part of that is due to the fact the Blue Jackets were one of the worst teams in the league, but if you're taking a flier on a player late in drafts hoping for hits, you can't have a rating such as that saddled to it. The smart play here is to simply look elsewhere.
Kuraly took on an expanded role on a rebuilding Columbus team a season ago, posting a career-high 14 goals, 30 points and 240 hits in 77 games. Kuraly's 11.6 percent shooting percentage was by far the highest of his career and he managed just a single point with the man advantage, so regression is almost certainly forthcoming. Toss in the fact the Jackets hope to contend for a playoff spot this upcoming season and Kuraly becomes nothing more than a depth option and cheap source of hits in fantasy circles.
Kuraly was a mainstay in the Bruins' bottom six last season, posting 23 points and 145 hits while averaging 13:17 of ice time in 69 contests. He's maintained that rate of production pretty consistently over the past three campaigns, so although he's a solid real-life forward for Boston, there's no reason give him a second look in fantasy circles.
Kuraly is coming off a 2018-19 campaign in which he notched eight goals and 21 points in 71 games, en route to recording a plus-6 rating. Those aren't eye-popping numbers, but the 26-year-old does bring a good mix of size (6-foot-2, 213 pounds) and energy to the table. Additionally, Kuraly is a swift skater, who can effectively lug the puck up the ice as well as cycle the puck down low. If he can improve his finishing ability, there's some untapped fantasy potential here, but as things stand, Kuraly does a great job for the team in his role as a versatile and hard-charging bottom-six forward.
Kuraly logged six goals and 14 points in 75 games this past season while working mostly on the Bruins' fourth line. The 25-year-old brings a good mix of size (6-foot-2, 213 pounds) and energy to the table and does have some untapped offensive potential, thanks to his solid skating and ability to cycle to the puck down low. Kuraly's fantasy ceiling is modest as long as he remains in a bottom-six role, but if he sees third-line work this season, which is possible, he could potentially double his offensive production.
Kuraly came over to the Bruins with little fanfare along with a first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for goalie Martin Jones back in June of 2015. Since then, the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder has seen action in eight regular-season contests with the big club, recording one assist in the process. Kuraly’s two-goal effort in Game 5 of the Bruins’ 2016-17 playoff series against Ottawa offers hope that the 24-year-old can push for a bottom-six role with the team this season, but the more likely outcome is that he'll bounce between the NHL and AHL as needed.

CFree Agent
July 27, 2021
Kuraly is being targeted by Columbus once free agency opens up Wednesday, per Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Last year was a down season for Kuraly as he tallied a mere nine points in 47 contests and was held off the scoresheet in 11 playoff clashes as well. Still, the 28-year-old center has a pair of 20-point campaigns under his belt and is not afraid to dish out hits, making him a solid third-line center option for NHL clubs. In terms of fantasy value, Kuraly should probably be considered a mid-range value play that would be a solid late-round addition in redraft formats.
