2025 Fantasy Outlook
A versatile forward often stuck on the fourth line, Steel managed to have a steady campaign in 2024-25. He earned six goals, 25 points, 89 shots on net, 60 hits and a minus-6 rating over 79 regular-season appearances. Steel has finished between 20 and 30 points in each of the last four years, playing with three different teams in that span. His short-term future is secure, as he has a $2.1 million cap hit for the next two years with the Stars after signing an extension in February. For fantasy purposes, he doesn't really do anything well enough to be valuable, especially while playing center most of the time. Steel can chip in a little offense and may get promoted to a middle-six role on occasion, but he's a streaming target more than anything else for when his scoring heats up. Read Past Outlooks
Nets go-ahead goal
Steel scored a goal on three shots and went plus-2 in Friday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.
ANALYSIS
Steel snapped a five-game point drought with the tally. The 27-year-old has struggled to find consistency on offense, but his all-around play has allowed him to maintain top-six usage. That should continue at least until Matt Duchene (upper body) returns. Steel is at four goals, 10 points, 32 shots on net, 30 hits and a minus-3 rating across 29 appearances, putting him on track to challenge his career high of 28 points from the 2022-23 campaign with the Wild.

The Stars didn't extend a qualifying offer to Steel, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Stars after briefly testing the market. Steel was effective in a bottom-six role for the Stars last year with 24 points through 77 games, but he rarely handled power-play duties. He'll be a valuable piece of the Stars, especially on the penalty kill, but his fantasy utility will be flaky without power-play usage.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Good fit for Minnesota?
Michael Russo of The Athletic believes the Wild could pursue Steel in free agency.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota doesn't have much cap space to work with, so cheap, potentially high-upside players like Steel, a 2016 first-round pick, make sense for the team to pursue. Steel has yet to reach his potential offensively -- he was limited to 20 points through 68 games with the Ducks last season -- but he's been good defensively, and he's still just 24 years old.
