2025 Fantasy Outlook
Montembeault was the one to lead the Canadiens back to the playoffs in 2024-25, doing so with a 31-24-7 record, a 2.82 GAA and a .901 save percentage over 62 appearances. Part of that heavy workload was because the Canadiens lacked an experienced backup, with Jakub Dobes and Cayden Primeau splitting time in that role. Montembeault is under contract for two more years at a $3.15 million cap hit, so the Canadiens can work on building their roster around his team-friendly deal. He's not an elite netminder yet, but as Montreal's defense tightens up, his numbers should improve. He's a quality No. 2 goalie in most fantasy formats and a low-end No. 1 in deeper leagues. Picks up win
Montembeault stopped 24 of 27 shots in Sunday's 4-3 overtime win over the Stars.
ANALYSIS
Montembeault made his second start since ending his loan at AHL Laval on Dec. 16, and he's earned back-to-back OT wins against Florida and Dallas. In those two games, the 29-year-old has allowed five goals on 57 shots faced. He should continue as the Canadiens' No. 1 goaltender ahead of Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler going forward.

Montembeault doesn't get the respect he deserves, but then again, respect is irrelevant in fantasy. By traditional stats, Montembeault ranked 41st in 2023-24 among those with 25 or more starts. He finished 16-15-9 with a 3.14 GAA and .903 save percentage in 41 appearances, behind fantasy pariahs like Ilya Samsonov, Filip Gustavsson and Petr Mrazek. Still, Montembeault's 18.39 GSAx (goals saved above expected) was 10th best overall behind the NHL's second-worst defense. GSAx is the measure of a goalie's individual impact on the game, which means he saved the Habs' bacon more often than not. Montembeault has exceeded expectations two seasons in a row. Does that make him a fantasy option in 2024-25? Probably not, unless his team takes an unlikely leap forward, but he might be a stop-gap off the wire or a daily play depending on the matchup.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Poised to start Sunday
Montembeault will likely be in the crease against the Blues at home Sunday, Stu Cowan of The Montreal Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The Habs are going to deploy Jakub Dobes on the road versus Toronto on Saturday, leaving the second game of their back-to-back to Montembeault on Sunday. The 29-year-old Quebec native has just one win in his last six outings, posting a 1-3-0 record and .855 save percentage. With neither backstop performing all that well, the Habs could split the workload heading into the Christmas break.
