Sam Montembeault

Sam Montembeault

29-Year-Old GoalieG
Montreal Canadiens
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Montembeault was the one to lead the Canadiens back to the playoffs in 2024-25, doing so with a 31-24-7 record, a 2.82 GAA and a .901 save percentage over 62 appearances. Part of that heavy workload was because the Canadiens lacked an experienced backup, with Jakub Dobes and Cayden Primeau splitting time in that role. Montembeault is under contract for two more years at a $3.15 million cap hit, so the Canadiens can work on building their roster around his team-friendly deal. He's not an elite netminder yet, but as Montreal's defense tightens up, his numbers should improve. He's a quality No. 2 goalie in most fantasy formats and a low-end No. 1 in deeper leagues. Yields four goals in loss
GMontreal Canadiens
January 25, 2026
Montembeault stopped 17 of 21 shots on goal in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Bruins.
ANALYSIS
Montembeault kept Montreal's net tidy in the first period before allowing two goals in each of the final two periods of Saturday's contest. Three of the four goals he surrendered came on power plays for the Bruins, who took advantage of Montreal's 26th-ranked penalty kill. Overall, the 29-year-old Montembeault now has a 9-8-2 record with a 3.46 GAA and an .869 save percentage across 22 appearances this season. Since winning each of his first three starts following his recall from an AHL conditioning stint, he has lost three of his last four outings with a 3.75 GAA and an .867 save percentage. With the Canadiens trending down in the Atlantic Division standings, Montembeault is a risky fantasy option and will have to turn things around soon if he wants to fend off Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler for opportunities in net.

Montembeault doesn't get the respect he deserves, but then again, respect is irrelevant in fantasy. By traditional stats, Montembeault ranked 41st in 2023-24 among those with 25 or more starts. He finished 16-15-9 with a 3.14 GAA and .903 save percentage in 41 appearances, behind fantasy pariahs like Ilya Samsonov, Filip Gustavsson and Petr Mrazek. Still, Montembeault's 18.39 GSAx (goals saved above expected) was 10th best overall behind the NHL's second-worst defense. GSAx is the measure of a goalie's individual impact on the game, which means he saved the Habs' bacon more often than not. Montembeault has exceeded expectations two seasons in a row. Does that make him a fantasy option in 2024-25? Probably not, unless his team takes an unlikely leap forward, but he might be a stop-gap off the wire or a daily play depending on the matchup.
On a poor team, Montembeault delivered passable results in the form of a 16-19-3 record, a 3.42 GAA and a .901 save percentage in a career-high 40 games last year. Montembeault has enough talent to be a backup in the NHL, but there's an open path to the starting job with the Canadiens to begin 2023-24. If that doesn't come to fruition, Montembeault could at least serve as a 1A to Jake Allen or as Casey DeSmith's 1B. None of the three goalies on the Canadiens' NHL roster is a particularly exciting option, but whoever gets a plurality of the starts could be a decent depth goalie in fantasy. Montembeault arguably had the most momentum at the end of 2022-23, but he'll likely have to win the job in camp. As such, this is a situation worth monitoring once training camp gets underway in September.
Montembault played 38 games for the league-worst Canadiens a season ago and his numbers -- 8-18-6 record, 3.77 GAA, .891 save percentage -- reflected that. Injuries to starter Carey Price and backup Jake Allen resulted in a much more significant role for Montembault than anyone initially expected. There's a real chance Price doesn't play at all this coming year due to a knee issue and Allen, the presumptive starter, hasn't been the picture of perfect health himself over the years, meaning we may again see more of Montembault than Montreal would prefer.
Montembeault had a 2019-20 to forget, posting a 5-5-1 record, a 3.34 GAA and an .890 save percentage in 14 NHL games. That poor performance allowed Chris Driedger to leap Montembeault on the depth chart, with the former now serving as Sergei Bobrovsky's primary backup. Montembeault is in an interesting position heading into 2020-21, as the Panthers brought in Scott Darling on a tryout. If Darling wins the taxi squad job, that would likely lead to Montembeault playing a starting role in the minor leagues, where he went 5-5-1 with a 3.00 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 11 games last year. Barring injuries to Bobrovsky or Driedger, fantasy managers can safely avoid Montembeault.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Poised to start Sunday
GMontreal Canadiens
December 5, 2025
Montembeault will likely be in the crease against the Blues at home Sunday, Stu Cowan of The Montreal Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The Habs are going to deploy Jakub Dobes on the road versus Toronto on Saturday, leaving the second game of their back-to-back to Montembeault on Sunday. The 29-year-old Quebec native has just one win in his last six outings, posting a 1-3-0 record and .855 save percentage. With neither backstop performing all that well, the Habs could split the workload heading into the Christmas break.
