2025 Fantasy Outlook
For a stay-at-home defenseman, McDonagh’s output in 2024-25 was solid, as he notched four goals, 31 points, 152 blocked shots and a career-best plus-43 rating over 82 regular-season appearances. The 36-year-old is entering the final season of a seven-year, $47.25 million contract with the Lightning, and he should continue to see top-four minutes. His usage with the man advantage is incredibly scant, but he makes up for it in other areas, particularly blocked shots, of which he has garnered at least 137 in four straight years. Moreover, McDonagh has also never recorded a negative plus-minus rating in his 15-year NHL career, so he can help out as a depth defenseman in deeper formats that count that statistic. The 2007 first-round selection had just 78 shots on goal and 23 hits in 2024-25, though, so don’t anticipate much production in those departments. Read Past Outlooks
Moves to IR
McDonagh (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, per the NHL media site.
ANALYSIS
After being injured in Saturday's 3-2 win over Washington, McDonagh will miss the next few games. He hasn't been practicing, and it's unclear when he will be available to return. He has recorded three goals, six points, 15 shots on net, 26 blocked shots and eight hits through 15 appearances this season. McDonagh's move to the IR list frees up a roster spot for the Lightning to recall a blueliner from AHL Syracuse ahead of Wednesday's contest versus the Rangers.

After a two-year stint with the Predators, McDonagh was dealt back to the Lightning over the summer to reunite with a team he'd played with for five years before he joined Nashville. Last year was a bit of an unexpected resurgence for the 35-year-old blueliner, as he posted 32 points (three goals, 29 assists) over 74 regular-season contests. He was as steady as ever defensively with a plus-19 rating and 139 blocked shots, and he even earned multiple power-play points for the first time since 2018-19. It's not uncommon for a player to have a good year in their mid-30s, but it very rarely leads to sustained success. Expect a scoring decline for McDonagh in 2024-25, though he still has utility in formats that reward his excellent defensive skills.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension talks shelved
McDonagh and the Lightning will discuss an extension after the 2025-26 season, Erik Erlendsson of LightningInsider.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McDonagh is reportedly motivated to get a deal done and the Lightning want to extend him, but it appears both parties will let this season play out first. McDonagh will likely have to take a pay cut from the $6.75 million cap hit he'll draw in the last year of his deal. Leaving negotiations for after the season also gives both sides more flexibility, though McDonagh has no interest in leaving the Lightning a second time.
