2024 Fantasy Outlook
After contributing a mere eight goals and 32 points in 93 games over his previous two seasons, Byfield broke out in 2023-24 with 20 tallies and 35 assists over 80 regular-season contests. He also set new personal bests with 161 shots on net, 66 hits, 19 blocked shots and 14 power-play points. Byfield received an increased role, spending most of his playing time on the first line and seeing action on the top power-play unit. He was rewarded in the offseason with a five-year, $31.25 million contract extension. Byfield only recorded two goals and seven assists in 23 games to finish the regular season, which is concerning, however, his improvements indicate a positive trend for his fantasy value in 2024-25 as long as he maintains his spots in the lineup alongside Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe at even strength and on the man advantage. Departs Monday's game
CLos Angeles Kings
April 14, 2025
Byfield sustained an upper-body injury in Monday's 5-0 win over Edmonton.
ANALYSIS
Byfield was not on the bench for the start of the third period after he was driven downwards into the ice by Edmonton's Darnell Nurse in the middle frame. Nurse then proceeded to illegally check Byfield again after the two players fell to the ice, which forced the latter to leave the contest. Monday was the first game of a back-to-back for Los Angeles, and the Kings will likely utilize the utmost caution with Byfield ahead of the postseason. He should be considered questionable, at best, for Tuesday's road matchup against the Kraken.

The No. 2 overall selection in the 2020 draft, Byfield split last season between the Kings (three goals, 22 points in 53 games) and their AHL affiliate in Ontario, California (nine goals, 15 points in 16 games). At 6-foot-5 with blazing speed, Byfield looks the part of an effective top-six forward. That said, he's struggled to consistently impact games at the NHL level. Los Angeles' usage of him hasn't helped matters, either. Entering the final year of his entry-level contract, this is a big year for Byfield's development. He's nothing more than a late-round dart throw in fantasy circles, though one with plenty of upside if he continues to see his even-strength minutes alongside Anze Kopitar as he did for large portions of 2022-23.
Byfield, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2022 draft behind Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere, played about half the season for Los Angeles a year ago, posting five goals and ten points in 40 games. Byfield is built like a linebacker on skates, has high-end speed, and easy top-six offensive abilities. Unfortunately, the Kings gave him just 0:34 worth of power-play time per game last season, not exactly playing to Byfield's strengths. His keeper/dynasty value remains through the roof, but it may be another season before Byfield becomes a desirable redraft option.
The No. 2 overall selection in the 2020 draft, Byfield was able to spend the majority of last season with AHL Ontario due to the cancellation of the OHL campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was extremely productive offensively (8 goals, 20 points in 32 games) for a kid who played the entire year at age 18, and he saw six games worth of action with LA late in the season, managing a single assist. Byfield is one of, if not the top prospect in the league heading into the 2021-22 season. He's built like a linebacker on skates and possesses the speed and physical frame to dominate in all three zones. It's going to be a process, but Byfield's potential ceiling is one of the best players in the NHL.
Byfield isn't expected to make the jump to the NHL in 2020-21, but fantasy managers in keeper formats should consider drafting him anyway. The second overall pick in the 2020 draft ripped up the OHL with 32 goals and 82 points with the Sudbury Wolves in 2019-20. While he was never going to unseat Alexis Lafreniere for the top pick, Byfield is a future star in his own right. There's uncertainty in whether the OHL will be able put on a 2020-21 season, so Byfield may end up playing with AHL Ontario instead. Either way, the Ontario native will likely have no trouble posting gaudy scoring numbers, and he'll likely be able to make a fantasy impact within the next three years. Scoop him up, or someone else will.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension forthcoming
CLos Angeles Kings
July 1, 2024
Byfield and the Kings are expected to announce a long-term extension Monday, Russell Morgan of Hockey Royalty reports.
ANALYSIS
Byfield is a restricted free agent following the expiration of his entry-level deal, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the Kings locking the youngster up long-term. The Ontario native appears to have taken the next step in his development, playing in 80 regular-season contests this past year in which he racked up 20 goals and 35 helpers, including 14 power-play points. If he continues to develop, Byfield should be capable of improving upon those numbers during the 2024-25 season.
