Past Fantasy Outlooks
Hoglander found himself shuffled out of the Canucks' lineup in 2022-23, seemingly getting passed by Andrei Kuzmenko on the depth chart. Still just 22 years old, there's time for Hoglander to reclaim his place in the Canucks' long-term plans, though it's unclear where he'll slot in for 2023-24. The winger had 27 points in 56 games in 2020-21 as a rookie, so there's 40-point potential here, but his ice time has steadily dropped since then, and he won't be of much use to fantasy managers if he can't get back in the top six. Hoglander will likely need a strong camp to get back on the radar in most fantasy formats.
Another victim of the dreaded "sophomore slump," Hoglander played just 60 games before core muscle/groin surgery ended his year. He wasn't effective when healthy, managing just 10 goals and 18 points. Hoglander's average ice time dropped by 2:20 per game, while his time with the man advantage dipped by 26 seconds per contest. The Swede has time on his side considering he won't turn 22 until right before Christmas, but there were enough red flags a season ago to make Hoglander nothing more than a late-round dart throw in redraft formats this upcoming year.
Despite a quick ascension to the NHL, Hoglander looked like he belonged with 13 goals and 14 assists in 56 games last season. The Swede saw regular top-six usage and some power-play time among a talented forward group, although he produced only one goal with the man advantage. Entering his second campaign, there's room for Hoglander to grow on the wing of either Elias Pettersson or Bo Horvat. Hoglander should produce at a 40-50 point pace while pumping nearly two shots on goal per game. He won't be much of a physical presence, but he can be solid as a pure-scoring presence, giving him appeal in standard redraft and dynasty formats alike.
Hoglander played last season with Rogle BK of the SHL, where he had a modest 16 points in 41 contests in the top-tier Swedish league. A second-round pick from 2019, Hoglander will compete for a roster spot in training camp ahead of the 2020-21 season, but the Canucks will likely want the forward prospect to see meaningful minutes if he sticks with the parent club. It's a boom-or-bust situation for Hoglander, who could skate as high as the second line in the spot left behind by Tyler Toffoli's departure for Montreal. It's also possible Hoglander can't keep up with the NHL's pace at 20 years old and spends the rest of the year with AHL Utica or back in his native Sweden. A savvy play-making winger, Hoglander is worth a look in dynasty formats, but fantasy managers may have to wait until next year to get a return on their investment.
