Nicolas Petan

The fact that Petan's newly-minted one-year deal is still a two-way contract, should tell fantasy owners all the need about his tenuous grip on a spot in the 23-man roster. Although he logged 54 games with the club in 2016-17, the diminutive center saw action in just 15 NHL contests last year, in which he averaged a paltry 8:25 of ice time. The 22-year-old will no doubt be looking over his shoulder during camp -- and throughout the 2018-19 campaign -- as other young prospects like Mason Appleton push for more minutes. Even if he sticks with the club for the entire year, Petan's ceiling is likely in the area of 20 points, which makes him a risky option considering he could spend some time in the minors.

Between stints in the AHL and a handful of minor injuries, Petan logged just 54 games for Winnipeg last season, recording 13 points -- including only a single goal. A two-time 100-point man in juniors, the creative center seems to have the inside track on the Jets’ fourth-line role, but he will likely be on a short leash and could still spend some time in the minors during the 2017-18 campaign. This is a contract year for the British Columbia native, so he should be motivated to prove his worth and earn a pay bump after completing his entry-level deal. Despite his position on the depth chart, the versatile 22-year-old did average 2:08 of ice time on the power play -- a role in which he tallied eight of his 12 assists. If he can continue getting on the ice with the man advantage, he could be a viable late-round pickup, but if he can't hold onto that role, Petan will remain a low-end fantasy option at best.

The 19-year-old Petan turned in his second straight 100-point season at WHL Portland in 2013-14, helping to quiet some of the skeptics that believed his 5-foot-9 frame would inhibit his success as a player. During his four seasons at the junior level, Petan’s elite offensive instincts, speed and puck skills have been on frequent display, pointing to real potential once he reaches the NHL. Still, the jump from juniors to the NHL is quite sizeable, and even top-level prospects such as Petan could benefit from some more development time. He’s probably about two seasons away from becoming a regular skater for the Jets.

This tiny dynamo is a highly-skilled offensive player with only one glaring weakness, his lack of size. Petan's playmaking ability is preternatural. When he has the puck on his stick, among his fellow 2013 draftees only Jonathan Drouin, Nathan MacKinnon, and Sean Monahan are his equals. For those in keeper leagues, Petan makes an intriguing long-term stash.
