Pots shortie Saturday
Foligno scored a shorthanded goal on three shots in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Foligno has three goals over the last two games, and two of them have been shorthanded. The 37-year-old is filling the third-line center role for now, though he could shift back to the wing once Ryan Greene makes his NHL debut. Foligno is at 14 goals, 34 points, 102 shots on net, 193 hits, 46 PIM and a minus-18 rating over 76 outings this season.

Foligno was primarily brought in to serve as a veteran leader for the rebuilding Blackhawks last summer. He did just that in 2023-24 while serving as a solid secondary scorer for the team, finishing the campaign with 17 goals, 20 assists, 16 power-play points, 146 shots, 57 PIM and a whopping 192 hits while averaging 17:46 of ice time through 74 regular-season contests. Signed through 2025-26, Foligno will fill a similar role for Chicago over the next two campaigns, and while he should continue to lay plenty of hits in 2024-25, it wouldn't be surprising to see his offense dip a bit next season as the Blackhawks continue to add fresh talent up front to push their rebuild forward. That will limit his fantasy viability to deeper formats that reward the rough stuff.

Named Hawks' captain
Foligno was named as the next captain of the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Foligno takes over as the captain after the team opted not to name a successor to Jonathan Toews last year. He becomes the 35th captain in Chicago history in what will be his second stint in that role, having previously captained the Blue Jackets from 2015 to 2021. While the veteran winger may not have a top-six role with the club anymore, he should still see plenty of opportunities with the man advantage.
