Matty Beniers

21-Year-Old CenterC
Seattle Kraken
2024 Fantasy Outlook
After winning the 2023 Calder Trophy, Beniers went through the dreaded sophomore jinx in 2023-24, dropping from 24 goals to 15 and 57 points to 37. He only contributed three assists in his first 11 outings last campaign and struggled with consistency for the entirety of the year. He averaged more ice time per game than his rookie season, playing in the top six and on the first power-play unit, but he couldn't regain his form. Seattle was among the lowest-scoring teams in the league in 2023-24, so Beniers wasn't alone in his struggles. However, he should be able to get back on track in the upcoming campaign. Beniers could be a late-round steal in redraft leagues, and he has the making of a superb buy-low target in keeper formats going into 2024-25. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a seven-year, $50 million contract with the Kraken in August of 2024.
Secures long-term extension
CSeattle Kraken
August 20, 2024
Beniers agreed to terms on a seven-year, $50 million contract extension with Seattle on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Beniers suffered a sophomore slump last season, posting just 15 goals and 22 helpers in 77 outings -- well behind the 57 points in 80 games he recorded as a rookie the year prior. Still, the 2021 second-overall pick remains the top center option for the club entering the upcoming 2024-25 campaign and figures to offer decent offensive upside. Fantasy managers should be able to count on Beniers getting back over the 50-point threshold.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Beniers' 24-goal, 57-point campaign in 2022-23 was enough to earn him the Calder Trophy. He was steady early on, but he quickly gained head coach Dave Hakstol's trust, earning shorthanded minutes as the season progressed. Beniers still shot 16.2 percent, though a player of his pedigree may be able to maintain a highly efficient rate. There's still room for the 20-year-old to grow, and he should have every chance to do so in a top-six role with plenty of power-play time in 2023-24. He won't come cheap on draft day, and it'll be tough to convince a rival dynasty manager to part with him in a trade.
The No. 2 overall pick from the 2021 draft, Beniers completed his sophomore season at the University of Michigan and joined the Seattle lineup in mid-April. He played ten games with the Kraken, producing an impressive three goals and nine points over that span. Beniers' 16.7 shooting percentage is likely to regress over the course of his first full NHL campaign in 2022-23, but he also added four points with the man advantage last year, and the power-play production should be here to stay. Beniers is still a better pick in keeper/dynasty leagues as opposed to re-draft formats, but there should be enough here for Beniers to be a worthy of a mid-to-late round pick regardless of league format on draft day.

Close to new contract?
CSeattle Kraken
August 20, 2024
Seattle is working on getting a contract extension done with Beniers, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
ANALYSIS
Per Friedman, Beniers' new contract could be worth around $50 million over seven seasons. The 21-year-old Beniers had 15 goals and 37 points across 77 regular-season outings in 2023-24. He won the 2023 Calder Trophy after producing 24 tallies and 57 points in 80 contests during his 2022-23 rookie campaign. Beniers, a restricted free agent after completing his entry-level contract, should be able to get back on track in the upcoming season.
