Mattias Samuelsson

Mattias Samuelsson

25-Year-Old DefensemanD
Buffalo Sabres
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Samuelsson has always been more of a shutdown defenseman, but he was able to post career highs in goals (four) and points (14) across 62 appearances during the 2024-25 campaign. Still, his name has floated in some trade rumors at times, as his injury history and a relatively crowded blue line make him an unfortunate scapegoat for the Sabres' long-standing troubles of getting back into a contention window. Regardless of where Samuelsson plays in 2025-26, either in Buffalo or elsewhere, he has limited scoring upside and doesn't post enough hits or blocked shots to make up for it. He's best left on the board in most fantasy drafts and won't generate much interest during the season. Read Past Outlooks

Samuelsson (upper body) is expected to be in the lineup against Florida on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Samuelsson should return from a two-game absence after being a full participant in Friday's practice. He has contributed one assist, one shot on goal, five blocked shots and five hits across two appearances this season. With Samuelsson poised to return, Zach Metsa will probably be a healthy scratch after being recalled from AHL Rochester on Thursday.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Injuries have plagued Samuelsson's four-year NHL career, including a shoulder injury that limited him to just 41 games last season. In fact, the 24-year-old defenseman has never reached the 60-game mark in a season. Even when healthy, offensive upside hasn't exactly been a staple of the Philadelphia native's game considering he has tallied just .19 points per game over his 150 NHL appearances. If there is a fantasy upside for Samuelsson, it's his defensive work -- he registered 106 hits and 86 blocked shots despite limited action in 2023-24.
Samuelsson was leaned on heavily by Buffalo in 2022-23, averaging 22:11 of ice time, but injuries including a broken hand and a sprained MCL limited him to 55 outings. The 23-year-old defenseman might be fine for the start of the 2023-24 campaign, but he's likely to continue to be used as more of a defensive option, which frees up his usual partner, Rasmus Dahlin, to play the aggressive game he excels at. That arrangement left Samuelsson with two goals and 10 points last season and even if he stays healthy this time around, the blueliner reaching the 20-point milestone is probably the best fantasy managers could hope for. On the bright side, he does have the potential to finish with over 150 hits and 125 blocks over a full campaign, if he can stay healthy.
A stay-at-home defender with limited offensive upside, Samuelsson played a little more than half the season (42 games) for the Sabres last year, picking up ten assists, 100 hits, 60 blocked shots and a minus-10 rating, while averaging exactly 20 minutes of ice time per game. He would appear to have the inside track to a full-time job with Buffalo heading into the 2022-23 campaign, making Samuelsson a sneaky cheap source of hits and blocks in leagues which reward those statistics. Just keep in mind there's going to be virtually no offensive production attached.

Samuelsson, who is dealing with an upper-body injury, participated in Friday's practice session and could be available for Saturday's game against the Panthers, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
