Hellberg saw action in just three NHL games for the Penguins last season in which he went 1-0-0 with a 2.50 GAA and a .922 save percentage. All told, the backstop has logged 26 NHL games over his career for the Rangers, Red Wings, Predators, Senators and Penguins. Hellberg split time between a pair of non-playoff teams in Ottawa and Detroit a season ago, posting mediocre numbers (5-8-1, 3.21 GAA, .888 save percentage) in the process. The 32-year-old Swede had a stellar run in the KHL from 2017-18 to 2021-22, but he's never been able to find his way in North America. Hellberg signed a one-year, $785K contract with the Penguins in free agency. He is expected to open the season as the starter for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and will only see significant NHL playing time should an injury befall either Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic.
A crowded crease in Nashville prompted the Preds to deal Hellberg to the Rangers in July, but he won't necessarily find an easier path to the NHL with his new organization. Hellberg made his NHL debut in 2013-14 when Pekka Rinne went down with a hip infection, but with the Preds' starting netminder back to full health this past season, Hellberg played exclusively at AHL Milwaukee, where he went 15-10-6 with a 2.33 GAA and .913 save percentage. It appears Hellberg will be bound for the AHL ranks again this coming season, where he'll likely serve as the No. 2 goalie behind Mackenzie Skapski.
