Karlsson got his feet wet in the NHL last season, posting just three goals and three assists in 27 games with the Canucks. However, down in the AHL playoffs, he turned heads as he led Abbotsford in scoring (26 points in 24 games) during their run to the Calder Cup Finals. His NHL advanced stats (7.16 HDCF per 60, 1.43 ixG per 60) suggest there may be more under the hood than the surface numbers showed. He got the Canucks on the board midway through the second period and then set up a Brock Boeser tally to get them within one late in the third period. The comeback came up short, but this was a positive outing for Karlsson, who continues to be a pleasant surprise in a bottom-six role. He's at 11 goals, 24 points, 76 shots on net, 62 hits, 26 PIM and a minus-5 rating over 48 appearances.

Karlsson is coming off a fantastic season in Sweden in which he racked up 26 goals and 20 assists in 52 games for Skelleftea AIK, resulting in him being named rookie of the year in the SHL. It's hard to imagine the Canucks will stick Karlsson in the minors given his offensive upside, so fantasy players may expect to see him on the 23-man roster for Opening Night of the 2022-23 campaign.
