Past Fantasy Outlooks
A move from Arizona to Winnipeg did nothing to help Capobianco's playing time in 2022-23 -- he was limited to 14 games, though he scored two goals in his first year with the Jets. Entering 2023-24, he's likely to again be an injury replacement, rotational option on the third pairing, a role that is unlikely to lead to a breakout campaign for the 26-year-old defenseman. With no guaranteed role, Capobianco is a non-factor in virtually all fantasy formats.
Capobianco only saw limited action in the NHL last season, but he was able to score his first -- and to date, only -- NHL goal in nine appearances. The third-round pick from 2015 has shown a scoring touch with AHL Tucson, where he had 10 goals and 37 points in 42 minor-league outings last year. The organization showed faith in him by rewarding Capobianco with a two-year contract in October, with the expectation he'll compete for a roster spot in training camp. Fantasy managers likely won't need to account for Capobianco heading into the 2020-21 season, as he'll likely start the year in the minors or the press box. The 23-year-old will, however, be near the top of the list for call-ups if the Coyotes' blue line is ravaged by injuries.
Capobianco's 2018-19 campaign ended early with a lower-body injury he suffered in his second game of the year at the NHL level. He produced seven goals and 32 points in 40 contests with AHL Tucson in what was his second straight 30-point effort in the minors. The blueliner shuttled between the NHL and AHL in 2017-18, drawing into one game with the Coyotes. He should be at full health to start this season, and the third-round pick from 2015 will challenge for a spot on the third pairing. Capobianco should see at least some time with the Coyotes this year, but he's not likely to make a fantasy impact and may end up in the minors.
Capobianco participated in the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic last season, joining AHL Tucson teammates Dylan Strome and Nicholas Merkley. Through 49 games with the minor-league affiliate last season, the defenseman put up 30 points (two goals, 28 assists). Capobianco was an asset for the club on the power play, where he notched 18 assists in 2017-18. While he still has some work to do on the defensive side of the ice, Capobianco will compete for a full-time spot with the Coyotes in the coming season with Luke Schenn and Kevin Connauton set to be unrestricted free agents.
