2025 Fantasy Outlook
In 2024-25, Johnson was a major reason why the Blue Jackets nearly shocked the hockey world and made the Stanley Cup Playoffs, coming up just a game short. Still a young guy at just 22 years old, Johnson will hope to be the beneficiary of a Blue Jackets squad that, ahead of schedule and with loads of cap space, will look to make some moves this offseason under second-year head coach Dean Evason. If Johnson continues to play with fellow former Michigan Wolverine Adam Fantilli on a line, the two could become a formidable duo moving forward. With a role in the top-six and on the power play seemingly cemented, a 30-goal, 40-assist season for the fifth pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft is not out of the question next year for the Blue Jackets' budding young star. Johnson scored an even-strength goal and added a power-play assist in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Canucks.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old winger had managed just one point, a goal, over the prior 11 games, but Johnson made an impact Thursday by feeding Zach Werenski in the second period for Columbus' third goal before wrapping up the scoring himself midway through the third. Johnson's power-play point was his first of the season, and after a rough beginning to the campaign under former coach Dean Evason, the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft seems to be getting more opportunities under Rick Bowness, skating on the top PP unit in each of the last two games.

While a shoulder injury cost Johnson the last 24 games of the season, his offensive production underwhelmed prior to getting hurt. In 42 outings, the creative 21-year-old managed just 16 points and would have missed the 40-point threshold even if he had been able to finish out the year. Fantasy managers will certainly be justified in chalking up Johnson's poor season to a sophomore slump on a team lacking supporting talent. The expected departure of Patrik Laine could free up a spot in the top six for Johnson, assuming his shoulder problem doesn't linger into the 2024-25 campaign. With a full season, Johnson should return to being a 40-50-point player, making him a strong buy-low candidate.
