Josh Brown

Josh Brown

30-Year-Old DefensemanD
Edmonton Oilers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Brown got into 51 games for the then-Coyotes a season ago, posting three goals and 10 points. He also racked up 100-plus hits (112) for a third straight year. His ice time dipped by almost exactly a minute per game, down to 14:45 per contest. He entered free agency in July and signed a three-year, $3 million contract with the Oilers. As things stand at the moment, Brown is likely to begin the season as Edmonton's No. 7 defenseman, although it's certainly possible he could earn playing time over veteran Cody Ceci if the latter struggles as much as he did a season ago. Brown was put on waivers Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Brown signed a three-year, $3 million contract with the Oilers in July. He produced three goals, 10 points, 75 PIM, 112 hits and 85 blocked shots in 51 contests with the Coyotes in the 2023-24 regular season. If he begins the 2024-25 campaign with AHL Bakersfield, he will probably be among the first call-ups for the Oilers if reinforcements on defense are needed.

Brown played a physical role with Arizona in 2022-23, compiling 87 PIM, 118 blocked shots and 152 hits in 68 games. He also chipped in four goals, three assists and 68 shots on net. Brown skated alongside a variety of defense partners during his first campaign with the Coyotes, averaging 15:46 of ice time per contest. There are much better options among rough-and-tumble defenders for fantasy managers to consider, but Brown should be able to record similar statistics in 2023-24.
Josh Brown didn't make much of an impact in 56 games for the Panthers last year, where he had eight points, 77 hits and 53 blocked shots. His usage was mostly limited to third-pairing minutes, and even with a change of scenery in Ottawa, it's unlikely his offense suddenly takes off. The 26-year-old defenseman will have to compete for an everyday job -- Artyom Zub and Braydon Coburn could challenge him in that regard. Even if Brown plays regularly, he's not likely to exceed 10 points with only modest offerings in the physical categories.
Brown will likely be one of the last roster cuts the Panthers make before the regular season begins. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound defender has spent the past two seasons in the AHL racking up 23 points in 138 games. What Brown has in size-advantage he lacks in puck movement ability having only one season in his career where he has scored more than 20 points. The 24-year-old should have a strong chance of making the team next season, and could make a few appearances in the NHL this year if the team goes through injury trouble.
