2025 Fantasy Outlook
Toews was once a terrific two-way center, but he's 37 years old now and hasn't played in the NHL since April 2023 because of health issues related to COVID-19, so what can we reasonably expect from him during his comeback attempt with Winnipeg? The Jets are likely asking the same thing, which is why Toews' one-year contract comes with a modest $2 million base salary and a whopping $5 million extra in potential performance bonuses. Look for him to open the season on the second line and second power-play unit. In that scenario, perhaps a 50-point campaign is possible, but there's also a chance his age and time away from hockey will result in him slipping down the depth chart -- though his faceoff abilities will likely keep him at no worse than the third-line center. He's the highest of high-risk fantasy picks. Read Past Outlooks

Tallies first point since 2022
Toews posted an assist and blocked two shots in Monday's 5-2 win over the Islanders.
ANALYSIS
For the first time since the 2022-23 season, NHL fans can celebrate the inclusion of Toews back on a scoresheet. Not only did the 37-year-old center grab his first point in the past three seasons, but he did so on a power play, as he registered the second assist on Nino Niederreiter's goal in the first period. With his first point out of the way, Toews should continue to see middle-six minutes with the added bonus of power-play time on the second unit. Toews likely won't be the 81-point player we saw in the 2018-19 season, but his early involvement in the offense is an encouraging sign that he has some high-level play left in the tank. While he shouldn't be on the fantasy radar in standard formats, Toews could bounce back into a solid option in deeper leagues on a Winnipeg team coming off a 116-point 2024-25 regular season.

Toews recently completed the final season of his eight-year, $84 million contract. He was still productive offensively (15 goals, 31 points) in his 53 games, but the future Hall of Famer also posted a career-worst minus-31 rating. Now 35 years old, Toews has battled health issues in recent years and recently announced while not officially retiring, he will not be playing in 2023-24. Perhaps Toews will join a contender prior to the 2024-25 campaign in search of one final Stanley Cup championship, but there appears to be a very real chance he has played his final NHL game.
