Jake Sanderson

22-Year-Old DefensemanD
Ottawa Senators
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Sanderson had a better offensive performance in his sophomore season in 2023-24, netting 10 goals and earning 38 points in 79 games. He also improved defensively and formed a solid shutdown pairing with Artem Zub. The 22-year-old Sanderson has tremendous upside as a two-way defender. He already claimed a spot on the top power-play unit last campaign, and his responsibilities could increase further in 2024-25 after the Senators traded Jakob Chychrun to Washington during the offseason. Sanderson should surpass the 40-point mark while topping 150 shots on goal and 150 blocked shots. Read Past Outlooks

Sanderson registered an assist in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Devils.
ANALYSIS
Sanderson has been good in March with a goal and 11 assists over 11 contests. The 22-year-old defenseman set up a Brady Tkachuk goal to open the scoring early in the second period Saturday. Sanderson is up to 48 points, 154 shots on net, 140 blocked shots and a minus-16 rating. While his defensive metrics were lacking earlier in the year, he's actually plus-2 in March, showing great improvement in that area while still being a strong source of offense and power-play production.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
There were concerns regarding how the 20-year-old Sanderson would handle the jump from college hockey to the NHL. He not only held his own, but thrived. Sanderson posted four goals and 32 points in 77 games in his freshman campaign, being named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in the process. He quarterbacked Ottawa's No. 1 power-play unit when Thomas Chabot was out injured and closed the year with 17 points with the man advantage. The lone concern for Sanderson's 2023-24 fantasy outlook is not only is Chabot back, but Jakob Chychrun has entered the picture as well. Any dip in power-play time could potentially damage his scoring numbers significantly, though Sanderson's youth allows for him to offset that dip with even-strength growth.
Sanderson, the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft, signed his entry-level deal with Ottawa in late March following the completion of his season at the University of North Dakota. A hand injury prohibited Sanderson from making his NHL debut late in the year, but he has since recovered and is fully expected to be a regular for the Senators in 2022-23. Ottawa will likely practice caution with Sanderson, who will play the entirety of the upcoming year at age 20, but he could very easily force the Sens' hand into a larger role if he gets off to a quick start.
