2025 Fantasy Outlook
MacDonald made 34 appearances for the Sharks during the 2023-24 campaign, and he racked up a career-high seven goals on a 14.3 percent shooting percentage. He spent the entire 2024-25 season with AHL Colorado but maintained his efficiency, recording 31 goals and 24 assists on a 15.7 percent shooting percentage. However, he underwent hip surgery in early September, a procedure that is slated to sideline him for 5-6 months. Once he's cleared to return to the ice, he'll likely require a ramp-up process, so it seems unlikely that he'll spend much -- or any -- time in the NHL this season. Read Past Outlooks

Lands on injured, non-roster list
MacDonald was designated for non-roster, injured reserve Monday.
ANALYSIS
MacDonald had hip surgery in September and is expected to miss 5-6 months. The blueliner racked up 31 goals and 24 assists in 63 games with AHL Colorado last season. However, given the timing and severity of his injury, he's unlikely to make an impact in the NHL this season and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

2018
On the strength of a totally unsustainable 14.3 percent shooting percentage, MacDonald appeared in 34 games for the Sharks last season and scored seven goals. This is a player that lit the lamp just three times in his first 101 NHL appearances entering the year. Clearly valuing the depth he brings to a lineup, The Avalanche went out and handed MacDonald a two-year, $1.55 million contract to return to the club he previously spent parts of three of his first five NHL seasons with. MacDonald will go about battling veteran Calvin de Haan for a spot on Colorado's bottom defensive pairing.

ANALYSIS
The Sharks might consider contacting MacDonald again during free agency, but he will be free to explore offers from other teams. The 31-year-old recorded seven goals and nine points in 34 games during the 2023-24 campaign while seeing time as a defenseman and a forward.
