2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gudbranson, who missed most of the 2024-25 season because of a shoulder injury, will be a welcome sight back in the lineup for the Blue Jackets this year. The veteran defenseman had four assists in the 16 games he did play while averaging 17:46 of ice time. At this point, a fully healthy right side of the defense for Columbus likely slots the 33-year-old into a third-pair role, but he is still just one year removed from a career-high 26-point season. It wouldn’t be surprising if the third overall pick from 2013 plays his way up the lineup at some point. His ability to block shots and willingness to throw his body around give him some fantasy value even if the offense isn’t there, so Gudbranson is probably worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues. Gudbranson produced six goals for the second time in three seasons in 2023-24 and generated a career-high 26 points across 78 contests. The 32-year-old blueliner led the Blue Jackets with 74 PIM and 170 blocked shots. He also ranked first among Columbus defensemen with 92 hits. Gudbranson was third on the team in minutes played while logging the most shorthanded action for the club. It will be difficult for him to replicate his offensive success in 2024-25 because it has not been his strong suit in the past, but he is typically adept at picking up hits and blocks.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Absent from morning skate
Gudbranson, who is dealing with an upper-body injury, wasn't on the ice for the game day skate Monday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports, indicating he won't face the Devils.
ANALYSIS
Gudbranson was injured versus the Wild on Saturday, logging just 11:29 of ice time before being forced to leave the contest. With the 33-year-old blueliner unavailable, Jake Christiansen is expected to make his season debut on the third pairing with Denton Mateychuk. Even once fully fit, Gudbranson is far from a lock to play on a nightly basis and could serve as a healthy scratch periodically.
