Drew O'Connor

Drew O'Connor

26-Year-Old CenterC
Pittsburgh Penguins
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Following the Penguins' decision to trade Jake Guentzel at the deadline last season, O'Connor suddenly found himself slotting into a first-line role playing alongside Sidney Crosby. The 26-year-old O'Connor certainly didn't disappoint, posting career-best numbers with 16 goals, 17 assists and 160 shots on net in 79 regular-season outings. At this point, the team hasn't made any free-agent signings or trades that would supplant the power forward from filling that assignment again in 2024-25. Playing with Crosby should see O'Connor challenge for career highs across the board this year, especially if he gets an opportunity with the No. 2 power-play unit. Read Past Outlooks

Scores in Friday's loss
CPittsburgh Penguins
October 19, 2024
O'Connor scored a goal in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes.
ANALYSIS
O'Connor opened the scoring for the Penguins midway through the first period, but the Hurricanes would score four unanswered goals to flip the script entirely. O'Connor has recorded points in back-to-back games for the first time this season, and he's found the back of the net three times over his last five appearances, providing solid numbers for a middle-six forward. O'Connor is coming off a career-best campaign in 2023-24 after posting 16 goals and 33 points across 79 regular-season outings.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
O'Connor played 46 games at the NHL level last season after totaling 32 appearances at the top level over the previous two years combined. He scored five goals and 11 points while averaging 9:49 of ice time with the big club in 2022-23. The 25-year-old was rewarded with a two-year extension this offseason, seemingly locking him into a bottom-six role for the 2023-24 campaign. O'Connor has nothing left to prove at the AHL level; he's totaled 73 points in 73 career games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, including 22 in 20 appearances last year. Assuming O'Connor gets a full season with Pittsburgh, he could hit the double-digit goal mark and post his first career 20-point season.

Expected to make Opening Night roster
CPittsburgh Penguins
June 28, 2022
O'Connor is poised to secure his place on the Opening Night roster heading into the 2022-23 campaign, Josh Yohe of The Athletic reports Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
O'Connor played in just 22 games for the Penguins this season in which he garnered three goals on 40 shots, two assists and 12 hits while averaging 10:17 of ice time. Still, the organization fully expects him to be a full-time NHL option next year if he can put together a strong showing in training camp.
