Mermis got into four NHL games between Utah and Toronto during the 2024-25 regular season, but he spent the majority of his time with AHL Toronto around a couple of waiver claims, logging seven assists in 32 contests. He's a passable veteran defenseman, but he'll likely be waived and sent back to the Marlies or claimed by another club prior to the start of 2025-26. Mermis (lower body) was unable to finish Monday's 2-0 win over the Lightning, and head coach Craig Berube said that the defenseman will be evaluated Tuesday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Mermis was forced out of the contest during the final frame after taking a knee-on-knee hit from Gage Goncalves, who received a major penalty and a game misconduct as a result of the play. Mermis recorded one shot on goal and one block in 10:34 of ice time prior to departing. The 31-year-old can be considered day-to-day until his status is updated ahead of Thursday's home matchup against San Jose.

With quantity over quality on the Maple Leafs' blue line, Mermis is likely to have a tough time getting into the lineup - if he's in the NHL at all. Last year was a career-best campaign for Mermis, who put up eight points in 47 contests with the Wild. The 30-year-old defenseman is unlikely to see anything more than a third-pairing role when he plays. At this point, a trade to a team with a thinner defense would be a best-case scenario for Mermis' playing time, but there's virtually no need for any fantasy manager to track his progress at the start of 2024-25.
