Headed for contract termination
Sheary was placed on unconditional waivers Sunday by the Lightning for the purpose of a contract termination, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Sheary, who had one year left on his contract at $2 million, has opted for a contract termination with the hopes of latching on elsewhere as an NHL player next season. The 33-year-old played just five games with the Lightning in 2024-25, spending most of the season at AHL Syracuse, where he had 20 goals and 41 assists in 59 games played. It was the first time he saw time in the AHL since the 2015-16 season. Assuming he clears, he'll join the class of unrestricted free agents July 1.

Sheary's offense fell off a cliff in his first year with the Lightning, as the veteran winger was limited to 15 points in 57 regular-season games. He missed a month early in the campaign with an upper-body injury, but by the time the playoff push rolled around, he'd fallen out of favor -- Sheary was scratched for seven of the last 13 contests. Things probably can't get much worse for the 32-year-old winger, but there's no guarantee it will get much better either. Jake Guentzel replacing Steven Stamkos does nothing to change Sheary's likely bottom-six deployment, and he's not expected to see much power-play time either. Combined with a lack of non-scoring numbers, there's little reason to draft Sheary in fantasy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Not expected to play
Sheary is not expected to play Friday versus the Hurricanes, Gabby Shirley of Bally Sports Florida reports.
ANALYSIS
Sheary was limited to 57 regular-season games last year, occasionally sitting out as a scratch late in the regular season and during the Lightning's first-round playoff exit. As such, it's unclear if head coach Jon Cooper is simply scratching the winger or if an undisclosed injury is in play. The Lightning will dress Darren Raddysh as a seventh defenseman with Sheary sitting in the press box.
